This IM-300SB arrived in the midst of our sub-freezing winter, so had to acclimate to room temperature. This carton is an improvement, seems thicker than past IYV cartons and was able to resist gouging, only a couple of minor punctures were noted on the side, which thankfully didn't punch all the way through. A double-thick square of cardboard was placed under the the body, and multiple thick styrofoam inserts kept the bass from shifting. Upon opening the carton, there was a strong odor of undetermined origin, and while not pleasing, it wasn't terribly obnoxious, possibly outgassing from the styrofoam. This bass had been shown to be temporarily out of stock, so was very pleased it arrived so quickly. After removal from the box and inner cloak or soft bag, it was that moment everyone wants to witness, one best described as when you remember that you just can't stop staring at someone, or something. Not every guitar from every company arrives in such good condition, so it's a pleasure to see and feel when it happens. 'Pristine' and 'stunning' are the highest appearance marks I've given new instruments and this bass fits both. There are no visible defects-anywhere, and no dust-anywhere. The wood grain and the colors show clearly through the gloss, so I wondered, how long ago did IYV's QC inspector handle the bass, then wiped it down before shipment. The neck is perfect, with no truss rod or bridge adjustments needed. After tuning the intonation is so far, spot on. This neck on this feels like my 1974 Epi acoustic-electric bass (one of very few still-surviving Epi bass models of that period which were in Japan). The bass feels, plays and sounds great, as as such, deserves a 'highly recommended' status; just grab one while you can. ... show more

    • Surprisingly Good!
This bass required some work out of the box to make it a real player, but once the work was done it is a great value. I specifically adjusted the truss rod, cleaned up the nut, adjusted the bridge for string height and intonation, and re-foamed the pickups to gain a little more height adjustability. Oh yeah... release string tension and tighten everything. Even the neck screws and the screws holding down the bridge needed a slight turn. This bass guitar sounds great, but to make sure it is bullet proof I am changing the function of the controls and swapping out all of the pots. I highly recommend this bass guitar if you work on your own instruments. ... show more

    • Came with a little bit of damage.
The bass plays well, and the neck is arrow straight. The only reason I'm only giving it 3 stars is because both of the volume pots are loose and need to be re-soldered. I did get it at a pretty good discount though because it was marked as new, but open box. (damaged shipping carton) Well, some damage was done to the guitar also I guess, but it sounds fine, it just crackles quite a bit when you adjust the volume. It should be a relatively cheap and easy fix. This is my fourth IYV, the rest are all regular guitars, and I wanted to add a bass to my collection. I feel pretty confident that with a little work, this one will be great like the rest of them. ... show more

    • Love this bass.
THIS IS A QUALITY BASS. If it was a popular name brand it would probly be in the $350 range. It has nice weight, and looks and plays good. 5 stars becouse it was only 150 and it is nicer than the guitars for 250. I have 3 IYV guitars now and want more.

    • Pretty good bang for buck.
The media could not be loaded. Unbelievable value. A few minor finish flaws but plays and sounds great right out of the box. Edit: Rewired to parallel from series like a MM. Still punches but a much clearer tone.

For the price paid it is excellent. No cosmetic or other details. Bridge is heavier than most in the price range and it features a bone luck nut. Set up was easy and it took well to lowered string height. Intonation good. Electronics worked as expected. Unlike the photo mine came with dot markers on the fret board which is a plus. Tone is good although the pickups are what is to be expected at this price point. Neck is more like a P bass so smaller hands might be challenged at frets near the nut.
