  • Good text, but not enough graphic
This book is an excellent microcosmic look at its subject, namely "also-ran" rock albums of the covered period. Includes dissed examples such as Zep's "Presence", as well as many acts I myself am unfamiliar with, & I own over 60,000 LP's/CD's. The most lacking attribute of this volume is the absence of associated pictures of album covers of the entries. It would especially be helpful to a novice of this music era time frame, as well as a connoisseur probing for what's "behind the mainstream" (and I LOATHE that term, except in reference to the excellent alt/ind rock/jazz record company of the early 70's, which doesn't come into Play here), to have an idea of what else is out there, so to be able to identify it when one sees it. ... show more

  • Outstanding list of lost rock gems...
Absolutely loved this book! Jim's list had me burning up Spotify for weeks, finding great music I had either overlooked or cast aside. I don't want to spoil anything by mentioning artists/albums from the book, but I was pleasantly surprised to see about thirty CDs on his list that I own and have enjoyed as underrated gems for years and years! Had to take a star off for the rough writing, however; a proofreader might have been a wise investment... ... show more

  • Mostly just major label misfires. Should have looked deeper
If you are a true rock fan who searched for better rock tracks than the pablum that was played on radio in the 80s & 9os, then almost every band listed here as obscure or under rated will be, at least vaguely, known to you. I was hoping for a real deep look into worthy independent bands that didn't have major label support so they never got the acclaim they deserved. One LP that leaps to mind in Ramases Space Hymns from '71, or the Jimmy Page produced band Cartoone. Or even the Roy Thomas Baker produced, Jet, which should have been massive! They were different and interesting. I was hoping to discover these types of artists. Not the lame crotch rock bands listed here which mostly all sound the same. I hope the author, whose style I enjoyed reading, will do another book and look for the truly obscure but deserving bands that made rock music the rich tapestry of sound it once was and may be again. ... show more

  • Pleasantly surprised
This book was referred to me by a high school friend and I really enjoyed it. Several of the albums listed I've heard of and was able to appreciate over the years. Highly recommend this book to anyone who loves rock and roll.

  • Discovering new bands and songs that I never knew I was missing!
I sit down read about a band that sounds like it's in my genre and then go to my streaming service to see what I think and in this way I'm discovering many bands/songs to download that I missed when they first came out.

  • This book is a hidden gem for the rock music fan!!
I only started to read the beginning of this really cool book, and I'm already interested in what Jim has to say. I love the photos of Jim with the bands and also his knowledge of rock music. The book is easy to read and keeps my attention! I'm excited to read on!

  • Hidden Gems
The author did all of the work for you. Just fire up Spotify and unwind. I am finding some obscure beauties from the late 80s that I would never have found otherwise.
