Within 24 hours of setting this habitat up, the ants worked together as a team, pushed out the tabs on the sides and escaped. Gotta give 5 stars to the ants and 1 star to this product for not considering this. Maybe I got some super smart and strong ants?

This is a decent product. The Giant Ant Farm is not that large, so I'm lead to believe that anyone looking to really enjoy viewing their ants should go with the Giant version versus the original. Also, to avoid having to wait 3-6 weeks for your ants to arrive after redeeming voucher, I recommend ordering 2 tubes of red harvester ants when you initially order your ant farm as the farm arrives first, and the ants do several days later. To avoid having to buy fake sand refills (Crushed Perlite) at an extremely inflated rate for topping up, or when you clean your ant farm, I would suggest that you just buy a bag of horticultural perlite and crush it up which is pretty easy to do with a one gallon zip lock bag and a rolling pin. Overall, the kids love it. Not going to lie, I think it's pretty cool too. We may buy a couple more of them so that we can connect them. ... show more

The ants need food, but (depending on what you feed them) the food gets moldy after a while and looks gross in the farm. Also, since there is no queen sent, please note that your ants will only live a few weeks. You have to pay shipping to get the ants sent to you (about $7) and the company WILL NOT send the ants if the temperature isn't in the correct range in your area. This is especially important to note if you are ordering them to use for schooling, because if your area does not have the approved temps, the ants will not be sent to you and your order will be held until them temps are right. This ant farm is awesome. I got this for my 5 year old and we love it. It's fun and interesting to watch throughout the day, going on many days now. The white sand really allows my child to see the brown ants in action and see their tunnels clearly. Set-up was so easy and quick, literally like 3 steps. The only worrisome item at first was that the recommended ants that we purchased on Amazon arrived and were "pincher/stinging" ants. I was worried why this type of ant would be recommended for a kids product. But I quickly realized it was because they are great little worker ants and they use their "pinchers" to dig out their tunnels. I had high hopes for this ant farm, considering this was for my daughters 5th birthday and this was the top thing on her list. We had fun setting it up, and I ordered ants to go inside so we wouldn't have to wait for them to come. About and 1 hour and a half after we set it up I come upstairs to find ants on the dresser just crawling around. They had pushed one of the ports out. I put tape over those then they started coming out of the bottom. Now they are sitting in my basement, and the whole thing has tape almost everywhere! I have bought several ant farms in the last ten years and have always had great luck. This is the first time I purchased this particular one and I was so very disappointed. I will say that I loved the look and style of the ant farm. However, after 24 hours all but 1 ant was dead. The ants did not do any tunneling. I am not sure how tunneling in sand is even possible. Every time they would try to tunnel the hole would fill up immediately with more sand. It was especially disappointing since this was for my 4 year olds bday present. No ants have escaped! Although, you should not put small ants in it, because they will escape. The type of ants you get from this company (which you have to send in for) are the perfect size. Our first shipment of ants froze because my husband didn't bring the mail inand it was 28 F outside. We just got a refill package (50 ants) and they are doing well. ... show more

I bought this as a Christmas present for my 4 year old son who loves ants. It came with everything we needed to get started except the ants. It is so neat! All of our friends and family spend hours watching them. I ordered the ants on Christmas day, and received them last week. I knew it would be a long wait on the ants. In the instructions, it CLEARLY states they have to wait for the weather to reach an ideal temperature before shipping. (I did have to pay for shipping on the ants but it was less than $5 so I'm not complaining) If it is too hot or too cold, the ants will die before you get them. They kept me updated with emails about the status of my ants. Only 1 ant died in the tube we received. There are also very specific instructions on how to set up the farm before you add the ants. The sand is not supposed to fill the farm all the way. You have to give the ants some room to start working! I see a lot of comments about their ants dying after a few days. We have only had 3 die, so you probably didn't care for them right. Also, just an FYI, you can use plain ants from your yard. They just have to be bigger than the air holes.
