A few years ago I was looking for microspikes and khatoolas were the only game in town.. being a smart shopper I knew better than to dish out $60 on $4 worth of metal and rubber. Somehow, maybe because of patents or something they had the market basically to themselves and the owner was laughing all the way to the bank. Finally finally finally that problem has been fixed. These spikes by Uelfbaby, whover the heck that is, are amazing! I basically flew up Big Slide mountain in the Adirondacks this past weekend. This is a trail that was at times like walking up a luge course. They also held up and performed remarkably with a 40 pound bacpack on a 4 mile trail with snow/ frozen creeks / rocks. They are a game changer! Thank you Uelfbaby for giving the consumer who needed microspikes the perfect product. Forget the khatoolas and yak traks (worthless on ice hikes) get these. I used these on a backpacking trip to the Grand Canyon. The top of the rim was very icy for several miles and these literally saved my life. No joke. If i didn’t have these i would of been stuck at the bottom till the ice melted. Great price and great product. And easy to put on and take off.

had the pleasure of hiking in the snow later in the season (April) by Flagstaff AZ. While I do wish I had snowshoes instead (at a few 5ft deep parts I sank into) these cleats kept me from sliding. They stayed on the shoes well, I had great traction on shallow unpacked and packed (groomed) snow and I think they'll work well for icy conditions as well. They were study enough that I felt comfortable leaving them on in patches without snow. I got the XL size which fit well on my 9.5 full size Oboz hiking boots ... show more

Short version: These microspikes are just like the expensive ones, just made with cheaper materials. Functionally, they are identical but they don't last as long. Long version: I live in the Adirondack mountains and take my dog for a several mile hike every day. The trails this time of year are frequently ribbons of ice and traction devices are lifesavers. My wife has a pair of the original but expensive microspikes that I had used occasionally but I needed to get my own. I had been using yak tracks. I bought two pair (different brands but same review) of the knockoffs for less than the price of one pair of the expensive ones. I have been using them for the past month almost every day. (snowshoes some days). The chief difference between these and the originals is the quality of the chain links connecting the spikes to the rubber harness. In both pairs of knockoffs, the links failed after a number of times using them. In one case the links separated and I could reattach them when I got home (these ones). In the other case the link broke. Conclusion: these work just as well as the expensive ones, but dont expect them to last a lifetime. Actually though the quality of these were excellent. Unfortunately, the sizing, even though they have a good selection of sizes, none of these fit quite correctly for both me an my wife. Mine were recommended from their sizing chart to be an XL for my hiking boots or L for my trail runners. The XL were tight on my trail runners but would be fine. However, they were way too tight on hiking boots. My wife was supposed to be a size L for her hiking boots, but were way too difficult for her to put on these boots and just couldn't get them on herself. Then she tried my XL's and they were too loose. The XL were fine for my size 10.5 day hiker/trail runner, but not my size 11 hiking boots. Nothing clearly was going to work for my wife woman's size 8 hiking boot. Sorry we couldn't get these to work for us, as they are clearly well made and would expect long life out of these. The elastic used in these is thick and very heavy duty, along with nicely formed formed stainless steel spikes and tethering chain. As a result, had to return. At this time of the year be certain to fit them first rather than waiting for next winter as you would be way past return date ... show more

I would advise using them on an extra pair of shoes because it takes a little effort to get them on but the flip side of that is they are not going to move around once they are on. ... show more

Used on a pair of XXL spikes for my hiking shoes to climb Quandary Peak this last weekend. A number of highly icy spots, mud, hard pack, and loose powder throughout the hike and these performed really well in all conditions without any comfort issues. Would recommend, especially at the price point.

    • It's like having snow tires on my feet.
My shoe size is 14 6E (triple-wide). I decided to upgrade my walking shoes instead as I have yet to find a comfortable pair of hiking boots (most sizes are only available in double-wide). It is a little concerning how much I had to stretch the rubber to get them to fit. They have yet to fray. So far I have been on one snowy hike. The improved traction was immediately noticeable. It's like having snow tires on my feet. Something to be aware of is that while these give +10 traction on snow, they give -10 traction on rocks. Note: These are not light and I don't want them to be.
