I had a pair of TSL aluminum frame snowshoes, and I loved them for the easy bindings. Instead of those rubber straps that are hard for me to manipulate with cold hands, TSL snowshoes have a ratchet binding similar to a snowboard binding. That alone made TSL snowshoes my choice. Having somewhat of a shoe fetish that apparently extends to snowshoes, when I saw this hyperflex version I had to try it and I am glad I did. I hike on uneven terrain and the flex is a great feature. And the toe bindings are even better than the ones on the earlier TSL models. My husband is now looking for new snowshoes, and he will go with these or possibly the new Hiker model that TSL has introduced. The only problem is we can't quite tell the difference between the Elite and the Hiker, even after looking at TSL's website.

Tried these snowshoes because I wanted to try something different than the Atlas ones I had just returned to REI due to them kicking up a blizzard when walking. These TSLs are absolutely perfect. I love that they flex, which makes it easier to be more active on them and get great grip. I had a blast this winter walking/running around some flatter trails in the Cascades. I picked them up late in the season, so didn't get to use them as much as I would have liked, but I'm really looking forward to putting these guys through the paces next season! Wearing these made me feel more energized in a way due to how fun and responsive they are.

TSL Symbioz Elite (5'8" 160 lbs) This review is similar to and partially lifted from the review by Peter Graf. This snowshoe is labeled as more of a technical snowshoe suited for icy and crusty snow and ice where traction is very important. I can also validate that these snowshoes have a superior ability in this type of terrain against my older traditional wood/leather snowshoes. In real situations I passed with little or no slippage other snowshoers that were having problems in slippery conditions going both up and downhill. These snowshoes have great sticking action in the form of both steel and plastic cleats and crampon components. The binding system on these TSL Symbioz Elite snowshoes is the best. Besides the great functionality, they look sleek and radical, especially the bright red model that I bought. The bindings provide a one-size-fits-all type of adjustment for all feet and boot sizes. The bindings have an easy-to-use sliding/locking adjustment for the length of the shoe, and both the front and back bindings are adjustable to the width and overall size of the boot. I am impressed with the both front and rear bindings with their system for tightening and the one-button quick-release. These snowshoes have a retractable heel lift option for climbing in steep terrain to lessen the stress on the calf muscles. It is easily set and retracted. After some fairly steep jaunts in the snow on the Swan Range, such as Columbia Mountain (Columbia Falls, MT) and Holland Lake area (Condon, MT), and locally on the Herron Park Chase Overlook trail (Kalispell, MT), I was very satisfied with their performance from the standpoint of weight, flexibility, bindings, and sticking action on steep, compacted snow and ice. Lateral movements on steep hillsides was also fairly good. However, they were not without problems. On the Chase Overlook trek carrying a day pack, I experienced problems in two different dimensions. In areas of old, deep, compacted snow with deep holes and very irregular surface where previous hikers postholed from day(s) before, it was rough going. This may have been difficult for any type of snowshoe, except those old style fat snowshoes where the surface area is so large that the edges don't fall into the holes and irregularities. I also experienced problems in areas of deep, soft powder snow on both the flat and steep parts of the trail. What happened was not enough surface area to prevent sinking into the deep powder and this powder snow provided little or no surface for the cleats to grip. The result was sinking, and on steep deep powder areas there was a lot of slipping. Another problem occurred on the Chase Overlook hike. A plastic piece (I think it is a shoe traction part that sits on the top surface of the snowshoe where the ball of the foot meets the snowshoe surface) broke off on the left snowshoe. It did not seem to impact the snowshoe function. Maybe the left foot front binding was not set quite tight enough--pure conjecture. I too have some suggestions for the manufacturer. Add some natural means of attaching the snowshoe bag to a backpack. This is a major point. When switching from snowshoes to crampons, ice cleats, or foot, I attach the snowshoes to the backpack. However, there is no means of easily attaching the carrying sack to a backpack. I carry the snowshoes in the bag, as do many hiking buddies. I also have more problems with the bag provided by the manufacturer. The snowshoes barely fit into the bag and the tiny zipper only goes partially around the bag, so this results in a difficult operation, especially with cold hands, to get the snowshoes in and out of the bag due to the large number of cleats and the serrations on the outside edge of the snowshoes. They keep getting caught in the mesh and zipper. In addition, there is no room to store poles in the bag. Please make a better carrying bag. I have seen much better bags on fairly cheap snowshoes.

Because of the adjustability of the bindings, the fit of these snowshoes is so much easier to manage compared to other snowshoes, such as Tubbs and MSR Ascend, that it is remarkable. Even though these light snowshoes weigh just about the same as other lightweight snowshoes, their flexibility makes them seem lighter. And they are certainly easier to manage over varying snowy to icy terrain. Instead of snowshoeing being a chore on a winter hike, it is actually a joy. Now I know why Europeans love this French-designed snowshoe. We own pairs of Tubbs, MSRs and Redfeather snowshoes, but these are now a part of our go-to winter hiking equipment.

Very comfortable, easy to run in without banging your shins, suprisingly good float for a small and compact shoe, very easy to fit with great bindings. This is the foruth set of snow shoes from various manufacturers that I have owned and this is the absolute best so far.

My only issue is we have had almost no snow. I did use them to snowshoe along the rim at Crater Lake and they were wonderful. The flex makes such a difference. Love how great they climb and go down hills. Much less fatigue. I had them on from around ten in the morning until dusk and they performed great. In the photo you can see how they are flexed to accommodate the surface I am on.
