Description

Following the success of Quadrivium, Sciencia, and Designa in the acclaimed Wooden Books series, Trivium is a compendium of writings on the classical subjects at the heart of a liberal education, bringing the wisdom of the past into the twenty-first century. The trivium refers to the three liberal arts considered in classical Greece to be the pillars of critical thought: grammar, logic, and rhetoric. Following on the success of Quadrivium and Sciencia, Trivium gathers six Wooden Books titles together into a beautiful six-color package that presents ancient wisdom in an accessible way. Trivium will include the books Euphonics, Grammar, Logic, Rhetoric, Poetic Meter and Form, and Ethics. Wooden Books was founded in 1999 by designer John Martineau near Hay-on-Wye. The aim was to produce a beautiful series of recycled books based on the classical philosophies, arts and sciences. Using the Beatrix Potter formula of text facing picture pages, and old-styles fonts, along with hand- drawn illustrations and 19th century engravings, the books are designed not to date. Small but stuffed with information. Eco friendly and educational. Big ideas in a tiny space. There are over 1,000,000 Wooden Books now in print worldwide and growing. Read more

  • Wish I had this as a Kid
Format: Hardcover
If I had had this book when I was growing up, I'd probably have enjoyed writing. It's really enjoyable and informative to read.

  • The Absolute Best Bathroom Reader
Format: Hardcover
Are you something of a nerd or maybe just curious about everything under the sun? Every short subject in this book is condensed into one or two pages with great illustrations and facts you never knew you wanted to know until you read them. Look at the Table of Contents. This is really good stuff if you use your brain for more than following the Kardashians or watching sports all weekend. This is a couple of minutes of great info compacted into digestible chunks and delivered while you are sitting doing nothing. (Put down your phone!) I read and reread some things that I want to brush up on. Someone did a really good job of compiling all this wisdom, beauty and logic. ... show more

  • Is this as good as the old book?
Format: Hardcover
I would not know how to evaluate whether or not the method of grammar, logic, and rhetoric is as good as it was during the enlightenment. But this is the same style thinking as the enlightenment and it shows. I wish the logic part was expounded upon. The topic deserves more recognition as a window into the divine. ... show more

  • Emphasis on style at the expense of some substance.
Format: Hardcover
A good intro for young people potentially, as well as aspiring writers. I do understand the need to stylize these topics for marketing purposes in a time where logic and sense-making are considered uninteresting. I have some gripes regarding the specifics of the content, but for those who would be motivated by nice illustrations and things, this book would be a good start. There are additional books included within besides books on grammar, logic, and rhetoric: euphonics, poetic meter & form, and ethics. More information is usually good, but I would've preferred a book titled Trivium to focus on the trivium proper. ... show more
