This unit came in two separate boxes. They were both in relatively good shape when received. The contents were mostly intact and ready for assembly. The only excepation is that the front wood piece had become separated on one of the shelves. The dowels and the shelf were mainly undamaged except where some of the wood fibers had been pulled away from the shelf where there was previously a glue joint. I simply re-glued the dowels and wood trim piece back into place and there is no evidence of any issues. Assembly of the unit was straight forward and I was able to complete it in about 1.5 hours. As other have mentioned there is a serious lack of labeling of the parts but if you pay attention to the drawings in the instruction booklet, its fairly easy to identify what goes where. Once assembled, the bookshelf is very solid. The trim around the front and on the front of the shelves are real/solid wood. The rest of the unit except the backer board is made of an engineered wood product or, what I would refer to as particle board, but it seems very durable and the pieces are thick so I don't expect any issues with this unit lasting. The backer, as others have noted is basically cardboard covered in a veneer; but, does its job just fine. My only minor gripe about this unit is in regard to the condition of the pieces when unpacked. The Styrofoam used to protect the content is relatively rigid and creates a lot of Styrofoam "dust" that was all over most of the parts to this unit. This created a bit of a mess when unpacking and assembling and required a thorough cleaning of the unit after it was all put together. All said and done, I am happy with this purchase and, more importantly, my book collecting wife is happy with it!! I would recommend it to others if they needed a bookcase of substantial size like this and, if not, the smaller alternatives. The loss of a star is primarily due to the lack of labeling on the parts and the Styrofoam dust all over everything both of which are inconveniences but manageable. ... show more

I spend a week looking for a solid wood bookcase with multiple sizes so I can fill my wall including under the window. Until I found this book case with average price. Definitely looks more expensive specially in the color I got that is Cherry. I got multiple sizes of this bookcase with same seller, put the taller on top of the shorter and screw the to the wall. The packages came fast but heavy, I got help for both assemble and lifting as I am not that strong. For sure need two people to handle. Poor assembly instructions. Parts are not labeled and do not match assembly illustrations. It took me six hours to assemble. When assembled, it is rickety and unstable. Very happy with the look. Easy enough to assemble (with 2 people and a power screwdriver). Once assembled it is very heavy and hard to move. If possible, assemble where you want it. You will need about 7 sq feet of floor space for assembly.

Assembly was relatively easy, even though no parts were labeled. It helps to take the time to look at the parts list and label it yourself with painters tape. The shelves themselves are sturdy. The paint used on the unit is very cheap and scratches without effort. One of the pre-drilled holes for the self adjusting shelves was not aligned, so one shelf is crooked amongst all the others. A really hefty, solid piece of furniture. This was relatively easy to put together. In about 3 or 4 hours (read instructions, try placement, then check instructions again - so longer than absolutely necessary with practice or repetition). The manufacturer recommends 2 people work together to assemble it but I did OK just by myself, I think. But is VERY HEAVY. You may need help just getting the two boxes through your front door (100 pounds + 150 pounds = about 250 pounds). Most difficult part of putting it together was assembling lying on face/front, then standing it upright when done. Furniture sliders helped with sliding the bookcase into place. There were a few extra parts, but only of the common variety (not the very specialized fittings/screws). And there were lots of itty-bitty styro-foam snowflakes. The easiest way to clean them was to wipe the bookcase pieces with towels. The only feature that was a little bit iffy was the back side of the shelves. Imaging a tic-tac-toe hatch but with a slightly different number of lines. Those were the panels joined by some kind of tape. They mostly aligned near each other and many gaps were concealed by shelving members but there was a gap or two after the assembly was done. Not too visible but there they were. But all-in-all the appearance was very nice and about the color seen in most of the advertised pictures shown of the shelves. ... show more

Finally finished with assembly. As you can see on the right side of photos the two side panels were broken during shipping. Contacted Cymax and worked with them to receive Left and Right Side panels.
