  • Specialist Holster Review - The Toughbuilt Large Holster with an extra pocket
Size: One Size
Toughbuilt Specialist holster Review. I paid with my own money, this is not sponsored or whatever. I do projects around the house, installing, fixing and maintaining things. Typical Homeowner weekend warrior tasks. I started to toy with the idea of buying a tool belt and fleshing it out to make me work faster and make work more enjoyable. Prior to this purchase, I used a cheap clip on attachment that allows for drills with a belt clip or a tape measurer to be clipped onto. My goal is to be efficient, mobile, and stay lightweight to avoid fatigue or pain. Weight and size. A common trend amongst tough built bags/totes/pouches are that they are very stiff, quite heavy, and a bulky, even empty without tools. I wouldn’t want to walk around with this on a standard belt that runs through the pant loops, definitely requires a thicker belt with padding that goes outside to distribute the weight. I was wearing this with a standard pants belt for about 30 minutes with only the M12 surge or Makita XDT19 impact driver, and I noticed strain in my back. When utilizing a padded tool belt that wraps around your waist, this was reduced significantly. Tool fitment. The M12 surge and Makita XDT19 impact driver have shorten stubby snouts and work fine. A longer drill, such as a full sized ryobi 18v, being longer, very well in the holster. One benefit of this holster is that it has a long “backplate” that runs between the gun (if holstered) and your thigh. This means any bits or extension in your drills will not be stabbing you, and instead rub against the backplate. Other compartments & Features. The additional large pocket on the front of the holster. I loved the idea of being able to put fasteners in here while working. However, unless you’re working entirely standing on a flat level, screws will spill out while bending over or working on a slope. Either a drawstring or a flap to enclose this pocket would be amazing. Alternatively, you could superglue some small magnets within this pouch to reduce this. This front pocket enough to fit a 16’ or 32’ tape measurer. I can put another M12 or Makita 18v battery in here. You could even fit another drill/impact. But this creates a lot of strain at the waist as the weight is further away from your center of gravity and a lever arm is produced that torques your hips out of alignment, unless you balance it with something on the other side. Drill & Bit slots are tight, but it is handle if you’re running only an impact driver and want to quickly switch between using your standard bit for fastening and hex drill bits. Another thing that I found odd is that there is a flap pocket on the side of the pouch, which seems pretty much useless because if you have your drill in their, the handle and battery will block you from quickly accessing it. So it begs the question, what exactly is this suppose to be used for? Attachment to the Large Toughbuilt 16'' Tote. You will not be able to attach this pouch (or any of the moderately larger tool pouches) on the side where there is a metal rail. The length of the pouch is too long, and will elevate your tool tote or snap the plastic clip right open. See my photos. You can however attach it to the same sides where a shoulder strap can go in place. Outside of using it with a padded work belt with suspenders (Like I said, I do not recommend this for long periods on a standard pants belt), I think where this shines is if attached to a ladder or stationary work bench. This is large enough to hold a larger drill and possibly even a second smaller or compact drill in the outer compartment. The big selling point is the clip tech technology. Toughbuilt sells a very cool “standard” drill holster that utilizes a drawstring pouch out front (TB-220-B), but this is a generic holster that can be found at stores that rhyme with “BLowe’s” and “Robert Freight” for cheaper. If they could add the clip belt tech on the TB220, this would be KILLER. In conclusion, I think it’s the size and weight are excessive for my use so I intend to return it, either to try the smaller compact / large (TB-CT-20-L)holsters or drop the idea of a holster entirely for the belt clip I already have, which keeps the weight of a impact/drill very close to my hip. I prefer to utilize my standard pants belt vs. my padded tool belt, and I wouldn’t want to use this model in particular on anything less than a padded tool belt, plus or minus the suspenders to manage the weight. It feels too much for what I do being in tight spaces and I can easily see this bumping into a lot of things as I work on trouble shooting appliances. Pros. - Clip tech modular system. This is the backbone behind their system and their biggest selling point. - Holds drills as advertised, small pocket in front for quick access - I like the idea of using this for stationary drill holster, eg. On a ladder or work bench. - Backplate prevents drill bits/extensions from poking your thigh as you walk/work Cons - Weight is heavier, size is bulky with no give/flex due to “durable/stiff” compartments . If you’re in a tight space, expect to scratch and bump into appliances/furniture/cabinetry unless you unclip it. - Front pocket shallow, things fall out easily if you bend over or work on a slope - Side flap pocket is essentially useless with a drill inserted. Lastly, something I have noticed is that Tough Built doesn’t seem to produce much innovation in their pouches. Most of these are over 5+ years old, and despite numerous reviews and feedback, they don’t seem to churn out newer models with fixes for the negative complaints. Their marketing team needs to step it up because it’s very hard to gauge how large and what these tool pouches are capable of holding since they never seem to advertise photos with actual tools in them. I’ll do it if they supply me with the actual pouches. ... show more

  • I love it
Size: One Size
This thing is tough. Made of heavy materials and sturdy as a board. It can be used right or left handed (I'm right handed) which is a nice feature. I bought this particular holster because of the small hardware pocket. It's perfect for holding that handful of screws for smaller projects. When I need to carry more screws I just clip the supply pouch to the left side of my belt and I'm good to go. This system is hands down the best investment I've made in tool belts. ... show more

  • Great!
Size: One Size
So far is been great, the drill stays in place even when the safe strap is not engaged, and the small pouch comes in handy for small screws and rivets

  • no "clip tech hub"
Size: One Size
It's probably pretty good.. dunno. sure would be nice to have known that it didn't come with the hub that makes it able to hang on a belt.
