  • Absolutely essential
Format: Paperback
My story is interesting. I never learned to play altissimo as a high school student. I went to music school, and was a very weak altissimo player when there. In the years since (it has been a long time) altissimo has become essential for the saxophonist. It is just part of the range. The same is becoming true for multiphonics. It is upsetting so many private teachers seem to be ignoring the ESSENTIAL work of overtones to develop the altissimo range. As an adult I committed myself to achieving this range, setting my long term goal of being able to transcribe Lenny Pickett (why not shoot for the stars and see if you get there?) I started with the Robert Luckey text, which is EXCELLENT and has tons of fingering suggestions for modern saxophones, but it only covers the 3rd octave, not the fourth, and there are no where near the number the overtone exercises as in Top Tones. When it comes to overtone exercises, Top Tones is simply the best text there is. I doubt it can be eclipsed. Now, I routinely play in the altissimo on all horns. There is no classical piece I cannot approach, and I can play fluid lines in the altissimo while improvising. I got there by playing overtones EVERY practice session, with no exceptions. You simply cannot be a saxophone player and not play overtones. These are the equivalent of lip slurs for brass players. It is easy to be a BAD saxophone player, and never develop the whole range of the horn. Playing the saxophone well? That requires serious work. Any private teacher (high school or college) who isn't requiring this text FIRST THING with their students is engaging in malpractice. Not only do overtones enable the extension of the range, they improve both sound and intonation. Sigurd Rascher is THE saxophone master pedagogue. Everything else that is of value either springs from him and has been expanded by others, or fits into his pedagogical vision. We need his complete works back in print. It is ludicrous that they are not. It is also ludicrous that altissimo seems like this mystical thing people can't approach. I will be doing my warm ups with this book and playing my scales and patterns into the 4th octave every practice session for the rest of my life. So should you. This is the most important book in the Rascher library, and we are fortunate this one is still in print. If you play on a modern Selmer style body tube horn, you will find better fingers out there. Many of these can be found online. Do NOT try to use these fingerings until you've played through these overtone exercises once. They don't need to be perfect. They do need to be "there" if that makes sense. If you play on an old Conn or Buescher, then these fingerings too will work well for you. ... show more

  • "Top Tones" tops in my book!
Format: Paperback
Sigurd Rascher's treatise on the altissimo register is a classic in the field of saxophone technical instruction. Very detailed exercises and fingering charts reveal the secrets of extending the saxophone range another full octave! Don't expect, however, to achieve results overnight. A lot of study and careful practice precedes accuracy in producing these tones at will. If you are initially unable to produce the entire harmonic series as he suggests, don't despair, as everyone's physical setup is different and some players find this step easier than others. Try the fingerings anyway - you might get lucky with the right breath support, throat opening, and embouchure pressure! Work with the hardest reed you can handle, as more resistance yields more consistent results. Consider as well the changes that have been made since Rascher's time in mouthpiece and instrument construction. Not all fingerings will work on every instrument, and some experimentation will be necessary to find the compromise between response and intonation. Nonetheless, this little volume comes highly recommended, and with persistent application, you too will succeed in mastering the altissimo register of your horn! ... show more

I knew that he wanted this book, little did he know that I knew how to get it for im Amazon. I bought it and gave it to him during our lesson and he was so happy,, so very happy. This was the end of the lesson for me that day. Next time he said it is difficult, very difficult it is only for the better saxophonist and it will take a while for me to get through this book but I love every minute of it. So I can only say money well spend ... show more
