I got this tie in the Red Tartan color. I usually don't spring for red stuff, but for Christmas time, it will be great and festive. The quality is great. It feels heavy and thick, not like no-name cheap ties. It is worth commenting on the sizing. I'm 6' 3", and have a long torso. To wear ties like this, I have to tie the "tail" end very short. That's normal for me, but if you want a longer tail, you may want to look elsewhere. The price feels a bit high, but I suppose that's par for the course with a name brand tie. There are many brands of plaid tie out there. Some are made of traditional wool, attractive but with a different look than this 58/42 polyester/silk blend, which is again different from the look of 100% silk. Other ties are significantly less expensive but, whatever the material, you can see at a glance that they don't have the visual impact of this tie. As a whimsical test though I ordered myself the best looking $10 plaid tie I could find (also on Amazon) to gauge how much the higher cost of this present tie was based on hype or name recognition, and how much was reflected in genuinely higher quality. My conclusion: the cheaper tie was well put together and did not disappoint and undeniably provided more bang for the buck, but the premium paid for the Hilfiger tie is not wasted, but bought some subtly different quality of the weave (as well as a silk blend, while the cheaper tie was presumably 0% silk), which improved its appearance in a way that went beyond any designer placebo effect—a win/win for both product lines. The inexpensive tie was good quality and an excellent value, yet the designer tie brought something to the table for the higher price beyond mere name recognition—specifically the relative reflectance and tone of the various color blocks in the pattern change with viewing angle and give the design a multi-faceted appearance while the appearance of the less expensive tie was flatter. At $70 this is not an inexpensive entry and it's possible you could still find similar quality for less, but you can think of the brand as carrying an insurance premium: you don't have to search the market, and you can count on receiving something above average in design and quality, and that carries a certain dash as a gift. The tie also brings us something of a mystery, as it's discretely labeled as "58% polyester, 42% silk" on the tip of the narrow end, but there's nothing that I can find about what this blend means for care of the tie. Can minor soil be washed out by hand or on gentle machine cycle? I eventually found my answer in the product description rather than on the tie: "Dry Clean Only". ... show more

I really like this quality tie, and love the traditional tartan pattern. It's certainly perfect for formal and festive occasions and goes better with a plain shirt. If the price had been less expensive I would have given this 5 stars but at this price the value is not justified so 4 stars overall.
