The TLC plates were of unacceptable quality. The aluminium backing was relatively thin and floppy, which made the plate more fragile, and the silica on the edges/corners flakes off easily. The spots appeared rather blurry and grainy leading to an ambiguous result. I returned the TLC plates for a full refund without any problem. But some weeks later, the seller messaged me that they had taken on my feedback to improve their TLC plates, offering to send me a box to review, free of charge. I accepted. After using their newly improved TLC plates for a few weeks, I confirm all the problems have been addressed - the Aluminium backing is firm, the silica does not flake off easily, and the appearance of spots is fine. They are of excellent quality, equivalent to those by Merck (which I have used extensively). The seller has pledged to maintain this quality of TLC plate. I have saved the listing and would buy these in future.

I’ve been using these aluminum‑backed silica gel 60 F254 plates for routine TLC, and they’ve been very reliable for day‑to‑day checks. The UV254 indicator makes it easy to spot colorless compounds under a handheld lamp, and the aluminum backing is light, flexible, and easy to cut if you want custom sizes. The 2.5 x 7.5 cm format is great for quick analytical runs—you can run multiple samples side by side without wasting a big plate, and an 80‑plate pack goes a long way in a teaching or research lab. The coating is even, spots stay tight when applied properly, and the plates hold up well through development and visualization without the layer flaking off. Overall, they’re a practical, compact option for labs and educational settings where you’re doing frequent TLC for reaction monitoring, purity checks, or simple teaching demos and want consistent results without using huge plates every time.

I grew up with a mother who was an art teacher, and she always had something interesting for us to do on snow days after we were done sledding but not quite ready to melt in front of the TV. One of her go-to experiments was taking strips of watercolor or blotter paper, gathering all the markers and pens in the house, putting small dots near the bottom, and then standing the paper in a cup of water or rubbing alcohol depending on the ink. We’d leave it for an episode or two of Nickelodeon and come back to see the colors separate and travel up the paper. I now know that was our first introduction to thin layer chromatography. These TLC plates are essentially the lab version of that same idea. The silica gel surface allows compounds to separate as a solvent moves up the plate, making it easy to see how many components are present in a mixture. With the UV254 indicator, you can also visualize spots under UV light, which is especially useful for compounds that aren’t visible to the eye. In practice, they’re used all the time in organic chemistry for quick, low-resolution checks - whether you’re monitoring a reaction, checking purity after a crystallization, or seeing how changes in reagents affect the outcome. If you’ve ever done those simple paper experiments as a kid, this feels like the grown-up version of that same concept, just with much more useful applications in the lab.
