Description

If your key objective in selecting the components for your audio system, TV or entertainment center is to assemble an impressive array of premium products, then this book is not for you. If you feel that a system that sounds and looks good to you in the store will make you happy, this book is probably not for you. If, on the other hand, you are a discriminating audiophile or videophile who wants to enjoy a system that produces excellent performance without paying for technical overkill, you’ve come to the right place. If you are a captive of the pseudo-science, specmanship and marketing ploys you see in the magazines and feel that you’re always a step behind, this is definitely a book for you. It may even change your life. This is must read book for you if you’re just interested in learning more about audio science. Read more

  • Ironic wasted opportunity, hidden gem for the few.
This is probably one of the most important guidebooks on audio ever, if not THE(Sorry OSU)! Kind of the antithesis (or antidote?) to "Stereo Pravda" the purported High End Bible. A man of truth V's an intellectually di$honest Snake oil peddler. The irony: While Kucherenko goes 347 pages mix of some truths with mostly bovine intestinal output, Mr. Ciapura goes only 96 pages of Priceless Pearls, inexplicably overestimating his intended audience, as stated on the title of his opus, with umbeleivably oversimplified statements. Wasted opportunity! Only old melomaniacs that never took the Audiophile BS seriously, because we KNOW SCIENCE, as Dennis does, can really and deeply appreciate this absolutely necessary GEM. This should be a 400+page Sword to slay the High End Dragon, not a Daysy BB gun. It will save a lot of dough those few who follow the advice, on faith anyway. It should be a Best Seller. Kick them when they are down, man ! ... show more

The Truth About Stereo and Video Specifications contains many amazing revelations. I wish I had something like this years ago! I am anxious to try the skills I learned from it. The book is also a fantastic plain language layman's guide to audio and video technology, and an excellent reference book.

  • I suggest reading Robert Harley's books ...
Sad to say the author's decades of "bitching" in trade publications has come to this. This fellow has raged against technology in areas of audio equipment in general (multi track tape machines), digital media formats and certain advancements within the radio broadcast industry and its operations for decades. Now a self published book of backwardness is here to bedevil us a second time. Let me take it upon myself to apologize to the hi fi enthusiast and modern studio producers and engineers for the ranting of this aging baby boomer fly fishing fanatic and say only this: Dennis remains lost in a bygone era. Avoid both his books. Robert Harley is the credible one on this subject. ... show more

  • Very basic and superficial
This "book" of 96 pages, with large font and lots of empty space was totally useless to me. I would not recommend it to anyone, not even to a total beginner in hi-fi. For instance, the author claims that speaker and interconnect cables make no difference to the sound (they do!) and don't even mention the difference power cables make (from my experience the greatest difference!) He dismisses tube amps and claims that solid state amps sound the same (they don't). In conclusion, don't waste your time and money on this pamphlet. The illustrations are basic, there are spelling mistakes, the whole blocks of text are lighter gray instead of black ... a total mess ... show more
