  • Interesting look into the experiences of a ride share driver
Format: Paperback
A very enjoyable read. The book consists of short peeks into the experiences of a ride share driver - the good and the bad, the funny, mysterious, and poignant. As with most self-published books there are some typos, but nothing insurmountable. I hope there’s a volume 2 in the future.

  • Entertaining diary of a rideshare driver
Format: Paperback
Written in diary form, this book is a chronicles of days in the life of a rideshare driver... focusing on some of his more interesting customers.. both good and bad ones... like most self published books there are some typos and the book does tend to get a bit repetitive so would have benefitted from some editing... however, it is well written and the stories are entertaining with some good character types along for the ride. ... show more

  • Nothing but the Truth
Format: Paperback
The Transporter: Tales from a Ride Share Driver by Roger Mathey is a serious contender for the most honest book I have ever read. The author is an actor, playwright, filmmaker, and well- regarded director, notably winning the 2002 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Direction for the Los Angeles stage production of Irvine Welsh’s seemingly unadaptable novel Trainspotting. This might lead one to expect a dialogue-centric work, but Mathey manages an easy shift away from theatre, and opts for what reads as a personal, sometimes frankly intimate journal of interactions between the central character, a deep-thinking empath committed to doing his job well while maintaining his self-respect in a for-the-money job not known for respectful clientele. Originally an informal blog of musings, the stories gained a faithful cadre of readers who looked forward to the regular evening greeting, “What ride should I share with you tonight?” followed by a helping of pathos, humor, and melancholia born of keen observation and soul-searching rectitude. Mathey, the anonymous, hilariously philosophical, adamantly non-judging driver in the front seat, is always open to the rider(s) in the back, whether they are: young college partiers barely able to walk, let alone drive; older professionals ostensibly in town for a conference but actually looking to get laid; workers at a sinister, high-security government facility miles out in the desert who only change shifts in the middle of the night. Some stories are shocking, some are silly: a college co-ed fleeing from sexual assault in a 100% drunken frat house; a group of stoners who end up paying double for stops at weed shops and Walmart. Mathey’s nights behind the wheel are a virtual parade of types, the variability and neediness of which would challenge the most easy-going story-gatherers. Our genial guide manages well in the improv-based environment, effectively giving what amounts to an extended graduate course in befriending strangers. There are moments when his patience and sensibilities are pushed past the limit, particularly an episode from his earliest driving days in which a raging client attacks Mathey’s car. Though fearful of losing his temper, Mathey steps in and levels the rider with a heavy right hand. Fortunately, his car survives and the police take his side, so he doesn’t press charges the and his job remains secure. It's clear that these stories were written with journalistic integrity, within an hour or two of when the events occurred; hastily, so the many, many details/reactions/conversations/emotions are fresh in the author’s mind. In doing so, Mathey leaves no—nor does he need any—room for elaboration. When he does fill in the corners, his instincts always leave me laughing out loud. There is confidence, directness, purpose, texture, an almost-gentlemanly quality of discretion, and a healthy sprinkling of snark to Mathey’s prose. Once or twice he commits the sin of a minor mis-key. For myself, this only strengthens the feeling I’m reading letters from a friend who has no reason to be uncomfortable or less than completely truthful. There are, in fact, many instances when Mathey confesses his impulse to make excuses for not interacting with, or flat-out refusing service to, jerks. These complex moments of guilt are painfully real. They sit in the passenger seat alongside a lifetime of matching baggage, good and bad, leaning hard on our driver (and, well before book’s end, our friend) as he rolls through the dark city, alone, unforgivingly mulling over his shortcomings and future possibilities. Not unlike—perhaps—a character in a future play. I hope Roger Mathey takes the hint and continues his quest for the truth. Painful or otherwise. ... show more
