Description

For the first time in motion picture history, the outrageous talent of Richard Pryor and the ingenious comedic sense of Jackie Gleason are combined in the same film. Gleason is U.S. Bates, a megalomaniac millionaire who owns most of south central Louisiana. Pryor is Jack Brown, a former journalist who has worked his way down the vocational ladder to the position of janitor in Bates' department store. Among Bates' other vast holdings is a young son Eric (Scott Schwartz), who visits his father for one week a year. Typically, Eric is chauffeured to the department store after-hours to pick out anything he wants. This time, Eric has a more elaborate toy in mind —Jack Brown. So begins the unique relationship that teaches Eric more about life than fun and games.

  • Classic 80s humor not for today’s generation or anyone easily offended
The toy is a classic Richard Pryor film the humor and the dialogue would never be accepted in 2025. It is outdated and would be considered offensive on so many levels and would offend large numbers of people with that said this movie is a snapshot of the 1980s in late 70s and what culture society and fashion was like the movie itself is not racist or discriminatory in anyway the humor is out of the time. This was a hit movie and it helped Richard Porter solidify his career which he had a long one, including being one of the top stand-up comedians at the time he was in so many hilarious movies in the 80s. I couldn’t even list them all, but the toy is a one of the kind movie that touches on a lot of different issues. You have to watch it through the right lens to understand the perspective in which it was written if you’re not from The 70s in the 80s this movie might offend you but if you’re from my generation, you’ll laugh your ass off. ... show more

  • Childhood Favorite
This was my childhood favorite movie, and I used to watch it over and over again, my mother called this movie my babysitter. And when I watched it after all these years it still brought that childhood smile to my face.

  • Pryor in top form, Blu Ray quality is awesome!
In The Toy Pryor gets to stretch his acting skills somewhat and there's the crazy zany moments but there also some serious moments here too but not enough to turn this into a dramatic overload film. The film's premise has been criticized for it's subject matter, but I think if Richard thought at any point it was crossing the line or racists I'm sure he would've been the first one to walk away from it and let someone know at the sametime. He must have realized the humor of it all from the script or he would have never agreed to be involved in my opinion. The film is funny and moves at a pace that doesn't get bogged down or boring in any way. Richard's interaction with Scott Schwartz who plays 'Eric Bates' is great. Scott plays the spoiled rich kid to a 'T'. Jackie Gleason puts in a nice performance here as well. He plays a rich, pretentious windbag snob, and does it well. Ned Beatty is great here too, though his screen time is limited. Teresa Ganzel who plays ditzy 'Fancy Bates' really pulls off that 'Dumb Blonde' routine well without overdoing it. I searched for Blu Ray reviews on the interwebs before I made the purchase as I already have the DVD and didn't want to spend more money on a substandard transfer of it. The reviews I read were spot on and the Blu Ray looks fantastic and is easily an upgrade over the DVD version. One of my favorite Pryor films along with 'Moving' so getting this very clean and high quality Blu Ray version makes watching the film for the umpteen time so much more enjoyable than before. If you can't find this film funny and enjoyable, you might want to check your pulse. Much fun to be had! ... show more

  • Great movie!
I have started purchasing some of the more classic comedies mainly because quite a few are becoming hard to get due to censorship, etc. This is one of many great and very funny movies that not only stars Richard Pryor but he also had a hand in writing, etc.
