I needed this because I couldn't figure out where the dust was coming from. Dryer vents that vent into the air (apartment dryers outside in Honolulu).     • Small and quiet with low airflow, but acceptable for size. Filter is almost a joke though

so originally, i was relatively disappointed. Low airflow, and the design allows air to bypass the filter. however, there's a grey disk inside, between the fan and filter. i removed this disk, and the airflow is easily tripled. And on the inside, the ring that the filter fits against has a gap, which allows air to bypass the filter. i simply covered it with electrical tape while i had it apart. it is significantly more effective now. originally, i tried blowing out a candle next to it to see if it would draw in the smoke, and if it would filter it or simply blow it out. it drew in very little, and blew it right out. after plugging the gap and removing the disk, it draws air in with much more power and thus moves a lot more volume. and with the gap plugged, it is forced to draw air through the filter, and i checked and found it actually does filter out the smoke, so i have no doubt it'll filter out dust and other particles. overall, it sucks. i have made it work very well and as advertised, but it's built in a way that isn't functional. as it came, it had incredibly low airflow, and pulled air around the filter, not through it. the airflow was on par with what you might feel coming from a laptop vent. it's not crazy powerful now, but 4-5 times the airflow that it got before, and the filter actually works now. but if you're not prepared to spend twenty minutes to disassemble it and remove that disk and plug that gap, then i wouldn't buy it. without modifying it, it's nothing but a weak fan with a filter stuck inside for nothing. the only thing that was as advertised was that its quiet, although the sleep setting has a high pitched whine and is actually the loudest of the three settings. also, it says it has a battery but it does not. it has to be plugged in. again, for the price, i'm not complaining because i was able to make it work, and it now functions far better than i expected. however, if you intend to use it as is, it's not suitable for filtering the air in anything larger than a kitchen drawer ... show more

The media could not be loaded. Wanting to replace an older, larger air "freshener" unit with something a bit more compact and supposedly more effective, touting HEPA filtration, I purchased this unit...and then read some of the less-than-favorable reviews - my bad. My very big bad. This is literally nothing more than the cheapest, weakest CPU fan known to mankind mounted in a cylindrical plastic case, meant to draw air into teenie tiny holes, through the filter and then exiting at the top of the unit. As expected, the ability for this purifier to actually draw in air is marginal at best. And I mean marginal. Not until I modified the unit, as instructed by another reviewer, did I even manage to reach that marginal level. Prior to making the modifications, the unit did nothing...except for making a high-pitched whine on all but the highest fan speed setting...then it was just an annoying whirring sound. My test was to light a cigarette, that I then placed in an ashtray five inches away from the purifier. The difference in results from before, and after modifying the unit to make it actually work as intended, meaning draw air IN and THROUGH the filter versus drawing air in that can simply bypass the filter entirely, were all but non-existent. Before modifying the unit, the cigarette had to literally be close enough to the unit to melt the plastic before it would draw in any of the smoke, at the highest fan speed setting, while after modifying, the cigarette could be placed ONE INCH away, AT MOST, from the purifier and have the unit draw in the smoke, but again, only at the highest speed setting, which is the loudest, but at least doesn't produce the SHRILL, ANNOYING WHINE heard at the medium and low fan settings. Now say you want to actually smoke that cigarette or use this purifier in the kitchen to eliminate odors, unless you physically hold this "purifier" within an inch of the offending smoke or whatever is the cause of your olfactory offense, it does NOTHING. Those almost-deafening smoke eater ashtrays popular in the olden days were far more effective, as was my old air freshener unit that uses good old fashioned charcoal filtration pads. And the only reason I even thought about replacing my trusty old unit is because I wanted a unit in black that would look a bit better in my living room, while my old unit was, and is still, only available in white. The only way to get this particular purifier in black, at the time of purchase, was to buy the TWO PACK, that includes both a black and white unit. I justified it thinking at least I would get an extra filter if I never used the white unit, but I doubled down and still purchased an extra filter anyway. Dear readers...please do not make the same mistake!! If you are a cigar, cigarette or other natural substance smoker and unwilling to strap this thing to your face when you light up, quit! If you routinely cook fish, take up the vegan lifestyle! Have pets or a baby? Put them up for adoption! All will be far more effective for air purification than this unit. Now that I have altered the black unit, I will not return my purchase. Instead, I will buy a $5 can of spray paint, customize my old reliable air freshener unit and place these purifiers where I don't really need any actual air purification and desire to listen to a high-pitched whine. ... show more

Every season is allergy season in our home. Between outdoor allergies and having a cat we’ve always had some sort of HEPA filter. I’m so impressed with these small units. When the HEPA technology came out and was available for the Home 25 years ago, we had these huge large air filters. You couldn’t hear that tv if you ran the filter in the same room. These have come so far and worse so much better. This little HEPA filter is amazingly small. It can sit on top of the nightstand or the dresser and it doesn’t take up any more room than a lamp. The best thing about it is it is extremely quiet. Running it at night while we sleep is just simply like having some very little white noise. It helps circulate the air in the room as well as filtering out any particles. It also helps eliminate odors. During the winter months when our house is closed up and we don’t open the windows it can get a little stuffy. This machine really helps with the Indoor smells that you may become nose blind to and I have noticed that there is a lot less dust accumulation on surface areas as well. ... show more
