Description

When a controlling old woman is murdered, her caretaking daughter is the prime suspect: “Miss Silver is marvelous” (Daily Mail). Althea Graham might have had a life of her own, had it not been for her mother. But when her father died she inherited her bitter, temperamental parent along with the house, and she has borne that burden ever since. She nearly escaped once, but her engagement to Nicholas Carey caused her mother to fall into illness, convincing Althea to keep living with her until the sickness claimed her life. That was five years ago, and Mrs. Graham is as fit as ever. Althea’s gloom lifts when Nicholas returns, and it appears that love may bloom again. Mother clings as tightly as ever, of course, but Althea has hope once more. Then murder comes to their household, and the young woman’s last chance at happiness is dashed forever—unless Maud Silver, the gentlewoman detective, can save the day. Read more

  • Great book- well written and clever!
I liked The Summerhouse! It was a fun-read with a clever sleuth and interesting characters. It ended happily, too. Thanks!

  • Sleuth Lady
The daughter of a mean old woman comes to Miss Silver for help because she is being accused of killing her mother. She has been stuck caring for her mother after her father died and her mom sends away her boyfriend to keep her home. Then, her boyfriend comes back and her mother is found dead while trying to stop their love again, and the accusations begin. This is a great story with great characters. ... show more

  • Charming but dated English cozy mystery
This book is what I would call a cozy mystery. It was originally published in 1959. The heroine, Maud Silver, is in the business of “private detection.” It is a nicely crafted mystery. And you get a taste of what English domestic life was like.

  • Cozy Mystery
I love Patricia Wentworth and her lovely Miss Silver. A true ‘cozy mystery’. And best of all was the availability of this in audible too!!

  • Well worth purchasing, one of the better books in the series.
I put off ordering this one too long. Wow. Even if not on the unlimited list, this one is special. I really liked the characters and story and it was good about HOW Miss Silver puts together an investigation. Some of the books kind of skim over it. I liked the couple also. Quite a fun read, and one of the better Miss Silver books. ... show more
