Description

In this visually stunning hardback, globally loved artist Lois van Baarle, AKA Loish, explores the origins, influences, and features of her style, and helps readers do the same deep dive into their own style. It is her third book with 3dtotal Publishing, a natural progression from the bestselling The Art of Loish (2016) and The Sketch Book of Loish (2018) which to date have sold over 85,000 copies combined. The Style of Loish now sees the artist explore her own style through several facets of her work, including creating volume, choosing color, establishing flow, and the ideas and subjects themselves. While looking at the motivation behind her own work, Loish also guides the reader through ideas and tutorials to help them identify, understand, and even evolve their own style. The book bursts with brand new, specially commissioned art that provides a unique opportunity to understand the foundations of Loish’s style. She reveals the journey she took to pinpoint when and how her style was created. Combined with candid advice and a passion for supporting fellow artists, the book is beautiful, inspirational, and practical for artists of all styles and abilities. Read more

  • Great examples of how personal art style can change..invaluable how-to's for digital painting
I haven't even gotten to the technical chapters yet.. but there is a LOT of how-to, and priceless info on how to THINK and SEE your work over time. Lessons on composition, palettes, shapes, sketching, backgrounds, conveying emotion and more with exercises you can try. Valuable book for any artist or student, whether digital or traditional - her digital work is brushy and painterly. I loved the examples of cringy teenage anime pixel art compared to today. (No Procreate back then! and who can afford PS?!) In fact, those were great examples, since anime has certain set visual conventions that can make it challenging to rise above. But you could see the very beginnings of unique art emerging. Obviously, Loish has succeeded, and made her art her own, through years of work and play!! I challenge any bro stuck in a mecha, tiddy, or game-art style phase to try these exercises to loosen up. I also loved seeing details of her art close up... SURPRISE, it's not actually 100% rendered or depicted as in a scientific illustration. It's just masterful enough to make your mind supply the rest of the details. This and many more gems are hidden in this very cool book. Normally I can't stand to look at these same winsome 'baebes' endlessly, but it's great as an example of one obsessive topic being refined, yet with a more relaxed hand/flow, over time. Her environments and lighting examples and lessons are incredible. Go with your obsessions and you will find your style. ... show more

  • Great book. Did not come with a case like the other books
I loved her books and I was excited to get her newest book. Sadly this one did not come with a case like her other books, hence the 4 star review

  • Beautiful
As always Loish’s art is stunning. This is her 3rd book in the series and all are equally helpful. I wouldn’t call this a tutorial book even though there are just a few tutorials. It’s more about educational techniques and artistic rule-of-thumbs that are to help your overall skills instead of learning to draw one character in one pose. Many of the lessons I would consider advanced (things you learn about in art school), but don’t be intimidated if you are new. These techniques are foundational and helpful to learn early. Having had similar education as Loish, I can compliment her on her thoroughness and ability to visually show you the concepts each lesson is teaching. She teaches art like an animator, and in my honest opinion, those are the best art teachers. They approach art like a key frame instead of a stagnant image, and this book does just that. Final thoughts: would recommend this book to anyone who is still learning and growing in art. You may know some things, but there’s always something to learn from any artist. ... show more

  • Amazing Artistic Resource
With this book, I now own all three of Loish's art books and I have to say this one is such an amazing resource and is full of so many helpful tips that will really help you think about how you approach your art. I would 100% recommend this book. It will help you explore styles, break down their different components and see how you can study them and apply them to your art in ways that actually speak to you. Expert advice on how to use reference properly so you're not just copying what you're observing, but you're actually learning about what makes the reference what it is, so you can apply it in so many ways. So happy to have this book be apart of my collection and art journey. Worth it! ... show more
