    • An amazing little book....
Amazon, why in the world do you require me to choose whether The Souls of Black Folk was "predictable" had "some twists" or was "full of surprises" - those descriptions are totally inappropriate. But if I didn't choose one then I wasn't allowed to write a review and I very much wanted to. What an amazing book. It is a slim read, and while some of it is clearly relevant to the times in which he lived, so much of it sounds like it could be written today. For those of us who will never know what it's like to be a minority and looked down upon or treated as "different", it is a revelation, a poignant insight into the everyday lives and tribulations of black Americans (and I suspect increasingly how foreigners are also being treated) It is touching, and also inspiring - it moves you to do more and to stand up and be counted. It is a wonderful book, and I recommend it for any reader, especially teenagers who will never learn about this in history class. because if we don't know our past, how can we possibly understand our present, or improve our future? ... show more

    • Buy the Dover thrift edition instead of this one.
I enjoyed this book very much, my review is of the edition. The printer omitted the music notes from the beginning of each chapter. It seems this is a printed version of an ebook, judging by the copyright info, which tells me that if I did not purchase this book, please delete it. The front and back cover are very plain, with only the author's photo and the binding has no title or markings at all. I have read the book before and wanted a copy for my library, so this version is a little disappointing. If this version sounds fine to you, then you should look at the Dover thrift edition for only $1. It is the same thing. ... show more

It is a selection of essays about life for Black people during the period of Reconstruction after the Civil War. So enlightening of how difficult life was for the emancipated slaves. W.E.B. DuBois is a fabulous writer, but not for someone who struggles with reading. His writing is definitely for senior High School, and college level readers. Beautiful, beautiful writing. Our book club reads something about Black history, or a book written by a Black author every February to improve our minds and understanding. Our group consists of 4 White people, 2 Indian (from India) people, one Asian person, and we all loved reading the book .Ignorance, Power, Bigotry are a horrible combination. ... show more

    • Knowing that this work was actually written in the 19th ...
Knowing that this work was actually written in the 19th century I still thought it would be a valuable perspective with applicability to today. It has that. Some of the writing is in an old, indirect style but not the bulk of it. It seems to be a valid and truthful history of what happened to black people post civil war. I have not read it all yet, but I haven't found a whole lot so far in terms of spirituality. That may unfold more in the later part of the book. While the part of the book I have read so far is very good, this edition has a major flaw: it claims copyright over the book, which has been in the public domain for decades, and, more importantly, contains the standard _fiction_ disclaimer in the front matter. It also doesn't have the small snippets of music in the chapter headers. If you don't need a physical copy, look it up on Project Gutenberg for free; otherwise, other reviews have recommended the Dover edition. Don't get this edition. ... show more

An interesting and lucid read that did give me a historical perspective on coming up and out of a past that was indeed shameful and the difficulties faced by an entire culture. Does nothing and adds little , with the exception of perhaps a perspective, to address any real honest solutions or responsibilities post civil rights. This is an incredible book/poem. It is not well typeset and THIS BOOK OMITS THE SHORT MUSICAL NOTES that are supposed to accompany the titles of the sections. Do yourself a solid and at least look on the internet for how you are supposed to see the sections as Du Bois intended. It's quite moving.
