This is truly a first of its kind for me. I used to listen to a lot of dance music in my early 20s and was curious how they produced this type of music. In "The Secrets of Producing Dance Music," the author introduces the history of it all and then dives into how you can get started by using Ableton Live. From discussing all the equipment, software, and tools you need, to finding your muse, and actually creating everything, its got you covered. My roommate is a music producer and he learned a few theoretical concepts when I showed him one of the chapters I was reading. You'll learn how to create the beat, write basslines, create melodies and harmonies, sound design, synthesizing, arrange it all together, add the vocals and hooks, add effects and processes, and finally mix and master the track. It is a very comprehensive book, but I wished there were pictures to show the steps along the way. For example, when using presets and modifying them, it would have helped to see where to find the presets in Ableton to reference as the author talked about oscillators, filters, and envelopes. Also I thought the table of contents was a bit cluttered with words and the summary subchapter titles were a somewhat lengthy. But overall, I think this is a good introduction to sound design and the theoretical concepts of dance music production and could benefit from illustrations or images to follow along as you learn how to create it. ... show more
