The best bass pickup I own! I had my luthier put it on because you need to take off the G string to install and I do not do double bass work at all. Make sure you install the pickup under the foot below the E side, not the G side!!!!! The quarter inch plug goes under the tailpiece. I’d recommend letting your luthier do it and while your at it have them check and or reset the bridge for you. It shouldn’t cost you much, they charged me 60 bucks for pickup install and bridge reset. Anyways, onto the pickup. I play a 3/4 Eastman, primarily bluegrass. I use this pickup into an Aguilar compressor into a 1x12 Markbass combo and the sound will blow your p*$$y off. Sounds good running into the board as well. I used to use a Schatten, which is very similar in terms of sound, but the installation was not nearly as snug as this realist pickup. I’d definitely recommend Schatten as well but the realist gives me comfort with the installation being so snug. 10/10 would recommend!!!!! ... show more

  • Very nice
I installed this pickup without any problems whatsoever...being careful not to remove all string tension. The sound is clean with plenty of response in all frequencies. It picks up the arco beautifully. Pizz needs a little adjustment with EQ, but still sounds good.

  • Beats any, I repeat, ANY other Double Bass' atachment!
1st of all, you DON'T NEED take out the G string to attach the looped plastic and make the jack's clip be fixed as directed. Just use a plastic band using the G and D holes and tie he looped. Easy like that. It's almost IMPOSSIBLE the Copper Square slide due the pressure made by the strings, only, and I can not imagine another situation than the bridge receive an accidental knock, what will move everything so ... relax. You have to understand a "pick up" can not make the whole work by itself, so plug you bass in good amplifier and equalize it at your taste. Took me 15 minutes. I return all previous tranducers very concern I won't find somethig that pleasure me. This one will never more leave my bass ... maybe I even change THE bass, but not the transducer ... ;) OF COURSE if you will record your bass, you probably will mic your bass AND your amp, prepare to record several times or learn how to play as a statue. No soul I mean. Learn how to equalize at your taste and you can dance all over the studio ... kidding. ... show more

  • So far, so good
My Realist double bass pick up arrived over the weekend. It's easy to install and took only five minutes (there's a YouTube video that helps you with installation). I plugged into into an amp and was pleased. Great for both arco and pizzicato.

  • My favorite pickup since 2004
Still my favorite pickup. The first one I bought lasted for 10 years, 2 basses, and countless gigs. I bought a new one due to time constraints but plan on sending the old one back to David Gage for refurbishing so I have a spare. FYI, they will refurbish for a VERY reasonable fee. Pros: - Makes your bass sound very much like your instrument. - No power source needed, all passive. Cons: - Installation can be tricky, it's not something you want to be taking on and off your instrument too often. - Signal can get out of control when run through a PA at high volume. Best if you have an amplifier with a notch filter (Acoustic Image Clarus, for example). ... show more

  • Great sound!
This is working beautifully on my daughter’s upright bass. She uses the pickup for jazz band and in church for contemporary services. It will buzz if the wire is touching anything so we used a plastic zip tie to shorten. Otherwise great product!

  • Difficult to rate!
I would love to give this pickup 5 stars because it sounded the absolute best that I've ever had, by far. However, it lasted for exactly eleven performances, and then just conked out. I'm now getting a loud hum from it whenever I plug into it. How could such an excellent sounding pickup have no durability whatsoever. This pickup conked out with absolutely no stress exerted on it. What a waste. And at $200, I don't know if I could trust buying another one. ... show more
