Description

A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK • NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE • An “elegantly argued and exuberantly narrated” (The New York Times Book Review) look at the building of social movements—from the 1600s to the present—and how current technology is undermining them “A bravura work of scholarship and reporting, featuring amazing individuals and dramatic events from seventeenth-century France to Rome, Moscow, Cairo, and contemporary Minneapolis.”—Louis Menand, author of The Free World We tend to think of revolutions as loud: frustrations and demands shouted in the streets. But the ideas fueling them have traditionally been conceived in much quieter spaces, in the small, secluded corners where a vanguard can whisper among themselves, imagine alternate realities, and deliberate about how to achieve their goals. This extraordinary book is a search for those spaces, over centuries and across continents, and a warning that—in a world dominated by social media—they might soon go extinct. Gal Beckerman, an editor at The New York Times Book Review, takes us back to the seventeenth century, to the correspondence that jump-started the scientific revolution, and then forward through time to examine engines of social change: the petitions that secured the right to vote in 1830s Britain, the zines that gave voice to women’s rage in the early 1990s, and even the messaging apps used by epidemiologists fighting the pandemic in the shadow of an inept administration. In each case, Beckerman shows that our most defining social movements—from decolonization to feminism—were formed in quiet, closed networks that allowed a small group to incubate their ideas before broadcasting them widely. But Facebook and Twitter are replacing these productive, private spaces, to the detriment of activists around the world. Why did the Arab Spring fall apart? Why did Occupy Wall Street never gain traction? Has Black Lives Matter lived up to its full potential? Beckerman reveals what this new social media ecosystem lacks—everything from patience to focus—and offers a recipe for growing radical ideas again. Lyrical and profound, The Quiet Before looks to the past to help us imagine a different future. Read more

  • Using History for an important Cautionary Tale
The author uses examples from history - long past and recent - to make an important point about how real social change happens. It is cautionary because today's world dominated by social media, short attention spans and the temptations of gathering likes, clicks and links, makes it all too easy to opt for the flashy instant-gratification that social media provides and not do the harder, deeper and more effective "quiet" work that builds the necessary foundation for lasting and meaningful change. All of the chapters are interesting and insightful. I definitely recommend this book. Disclosure: I am featured in the "Cyberspace" chapter. Gal Beckerman does a good job describing me and my work in the 80s at the WELL, the first online community. ... show more

  • Predictable Origins of Ideas
I was disappointed in this book, although the fact that each chapter is a separate story, and not connected to the one before it, is something I should have seen coming. But I did find going from one chapter to the next to be a leap, every time. Also, what is so unexpected about the origins of these ideas? Measuring longitude, developing the Internet, starting the Arab Spring demonstrations, or the White Nationalist efforts in the USA. All of these begin with a single person, or small group coming up with an idea; they quickly breakthrough to a larger group and then KABOOM, the bomb goes off. It is hard for me to imagine who would be the audience for this book. If you have an interest in any of the topics given chapter length overviews here, there are usually entire books devoted to the same topic. ... show more

  • valuable toolkit for organizing
The historical method, stretching from1635 to 2021, helps place the story of organizing via social media into maximum context. Focusing each major example on one or few individual leaders personalizes the history lessons. Our modern predicament of social media gone wild is presented seriously but optimistically. Man may become the tool of his tools, but also can eventually master the tools ... show more

  • no very radical
I didn't find much in this book that was radical. What stood out most was that almost all of these efforts either failed in their original conception or were quickly co-opted to the point where they got smothered. So what's the lesson we're supposed to take from this?

  • WOW
I can't remember a book which ever outlined the process of creating change so beautifully. How I wish the progressive movement would grab onto it. Climate change could be achieved if we had started it cooking twenty years ago.
