Description

In The Power of the Actor, a Los Angeles Times bestseller, premier acting teacher and coach Ivana Chubbuck reveals her cutting-edge technique, which has launched some of the most successful acting careers in Hollywood. The first book from the instructor who has taught Charlize Theron, Brad Pitt, Elisabeth Shue, Djimon Hounsou, and Halle Berry, The Power of the Actor guides you to dynamic and effective results. For many of today’s major talents, the Chubbuck Technique is the leading edge of acting for the twenty-first century. Ivana Chubbuck has developed a curriculum that takes the theories of the acting masters, such as Stanislavski, Meisner, and Hagen, to the next step by utilizing inner pain and emotions, not as an end in itself, but rather as a way to drive and win a goal.In addition to the powerful twelve-step process, the book takes well-known scripts, both classic and contemporary, and demonstrates how to precisely apply Chubbuck’s script-analysis process. The Power of the Actor is filled with fascinating and inspiring behind-the-scenes accounts of how noted actors have mastered their craft and have accomplished success in such a difficult and competitive field. • So you wanna be an actor, huh?? So you wanna be an actor, huh??
Format: Paperback
Halfway through it, but good reading so far. Pretty sure this is the original version and learned there is an update also. Very informative with helpful examples and funny moments that stress the importance of knowing your craft, rather than trying to mechanically plan your way to success. Respecting the art and the audience by understanding that the audience is smart, and can tell the difference between an actor simply knowing the role and the actor who becomes the role. From a novice viewpoint, the work seems tedious, but the reading explains that “becoming” is a process, and the serious actor knows there’s work ahead and not only wont shy from it, but buckles up for the long haul. ... show more

  • Good Stuff…
An easy read, and very insightful. An excellent resource book for anyone trying NOT to ACT. Should be part of every Actor’s library.

  • Practical and wonderful
Format: Paperback
This book is essential to anyone aspiring to be any kind of actor. The process can be applied across all genre's. I am a student at Ivana Chubbuck's studio in LA, and I have to say that even though I benefit from her actual physical presence and face to face teaching, I couldn't imagine not having the book. It's kind of like our bible (pardon my blasphemy). I have gifted this book to my actor friends who live outside LA, and it has been received well. So, what is this book without my close personal bias? In short, it's a step by step practical way that shows you how to get the most out of your scene study. Step one leads you into step two, and so on and so forth. And then as a bonus, there are also chapters that give you step by step ways to effectively act out certain circumstances like dying, being drunk, or being high, etc. Step by Step people! This book is practical! It's not full of theoretical ethereal bull poo poo. It's tried and tested. ... show more

  • Required for her classes
Format: Paperback
I like this book. I bought it because I'm taking her classes next month and you're supposed to read this before you start. I like it because it BREAKS things down, it's a great process and Ivana is clearly very smart. It's missing a star because sometimes, I'd get lost. There are a lot of name-drops / examples of celebrities she's worked with, and while I can understand her reasoning for doing that, it was just too much information for me. I wish it was just an example instead of making it more complicated and cluttered by adding the names of celebrities and what she did to work with them. (I have ADHD and it's hard for me to focus and hold attention, so maybe this is just me. ... show more

  • great detailed technique
I really enjoyed and got inspired by this book. There are a lot of things that made sense but more that challenged y comfort level of approaching anything in life. It reflects how hard Ms Chubbuck goes after success with a great focus on preparedness and hard work. Shows that anyone can be who they want to.. ... show more
