Out of nowhere, we’re confronting the end of a relationship, an unexpected diagnosis, the loss of a job, or some other twist of fate. In these moments, it can feel like we’re free-falling into the unknown. As a cognitive scientist, Maya Shankar has spent decades studying the human mind. When an unwanted change in her own life left her reeling, she sought out people who had navigated major disruptions. In The Other Side of Change, Shankar tells their riveting, singular stories and weaves in scientific insights to illuminate universal lessons hidden within them. The result is a rich portrait of our complex reactions to change and a deep well of wisdom we can draw from during these experiences. Shankar invites us to rethink our relationship with change altogether. When a big change happens to us, it can lead to profound change within us. • Fantastic read!
Format: Hardcover
I loved this book, which made me reconsider my mindset and the world around me. A few things really stuck with me: 1. The structure of the book was fantastic. Each chapter reveals a story of tremendous change, and each of those stories stand beautifully on their own. However, Dr. Shankar has skillfully woven scientific research as well as her personal experience around the individual stories. This structure is engaging from page one. I couldn't put the book down, but I also appreciate this organization for a non-fiction book—you could easily read a chapter and pick it back up later. 2. The tone of the book is special. Other books I have read in this genre can feel generic or far-reaching, but these stories hit home because of the close narrative proximity. This is thanks to the writing style. Dr. Shankar invites you in to each story so it feels as though you are sitting with a friend. I felt so connected and invested in each story of change, making this anything but a didactic self-help book. 3. The stories are unforgettable. I was lucky enough to read an advance copy, and even months later, the individual stories of change have stuck with me. I often find my mind wandering back to the characters and small details, which is the hallmark of a great book. This book has genuinely shaped how I think about struggle, joy, and change. Whether you’ve been through a big change yourself, enjoy considering the interconnectedness of humanity , or want to grow your understanding of change, you will love this book. I know I will be rereading it (which I rarely do!) to feel that connection again. I’ve already preordered copies for family and friends, as this is a book I will immediately recommend to a wide variety of readers. ... show more

  • A book of wisdom and hope
Format: Kindle
I learned so much from this beautifully written and powerful book. It's packed full of stories of people who survived the very worst forms of adversity in life and then became transformed by them. The core insight — that we underestimate our own capacity to evolve through adversity, and that the question isn't how we'll survive a change but who we'll become because of it — is one I'll be sitting with for a long time. A beautiful reflection on the power of the human spirit. I highly recommend it. ... show more

  • This book unlocked new perspectives on how to change
Format: Hardcover
I've dabbled in my fair share of books about life changes, and this one struck a deep and meaningful chord. I read an early version of Maya Shankar's "The Other Side of Change." It's a deeply authentic collection of real life stories lightly sprinkled with guidance from behavioral science. What struck me most was the book's profound authenticity. Dr. Shankar writes not from a pedestal, but from the messy, complicated trenches of real life. She shares her own stumbles and moments of doubt with a vulnerability that is instantly relatable. There’s no promise of a "5-step plan to a perfect life." Instead, she offers a compassionate perspective that honors the slow, non-linear process of genuine transformation. It feels like a conversation with a wise, empathetic friend who happens to be an expert in her field. The power of this book lies in its real stories. Instead of vague anecdotes, we get to know a handful of individuals from diverse backgrounds, each navigating a significant life change. We meet actual people: a student, a mother, a journalist. Their stories are not sanitized for effect; they are raw, honest, and deeply human. I saw pieces of my own struggles in their experiences, which made their eventual breakthroughs feel not just inspiring, but attainable. Dr. Shankar shows how small, almost imperceptible shifts in their mindset and habit led to profound and lasting change. Finally, the touch of behavioral science is masterfully done. It's present enough to give the book a solid foundation of credibility, but it never feels like a textbook. Complex concepts are explained through the lens of the stories being told. Dr. Shankar seamlessly connects the "why" it works (the science) with the "how" it feels (the human experience). This approach made the principles stick with me in a way that dry, academic explanations never could. The Other Side of Change is a must-read for anyone who is experiencing a big life transition. It's a beautiful, honest, and quietly powerful book that will stay with you long after you've turned the final page. ... show more

  • Not Everybody's Cup of Tea
Format: Kindle
I am so glad I borrowed this book from the local library instead of purchasing it. The personal shared stories are the best part of the book in my opinion. The scientific explanations and interventions were not as informative as I think they should have been. It is a great book for anyone dealing with life altering issues (death, health issue, a devastating loss, or major transition) in life. I couldn’t give it more praise because I put my strength and trust in God. I rely on God, not science for my answers. ... show more

  • Finding Comfort During Disruption
Format: Kindle
Dr. Maya Shankar had high hopes of becoming a parent—until those dreams were shattered. Like many of us, she’d often heard the refrain that while we can’t control what happens to us, we can control our reaction. That’s intended to be an empowering mantra, for Dr. Shankar, it registered as a mere platitude. Sure, reacting with a constructive perspective sounds great in theory, but how does one actually go about doing that when life falls apart? This question prompted Dr. Maya to connect with others who had navigated their own life-altering disruptions. In 2021, these unfiltered conversations evolved into her podcast, A Slight Change of Plans. As a prominent cognitive scientist who studies how we develop beliefs, make decisions, and respond to failure, she figured these interviews could serve as a bridge to understanding our interior lives. Our internal psychological experiences during upheaval are often hidden; she needed a breakdown to truly understand them. After more than one hundred hours of interviewing, a striking pattern emerged: people facing vastly different situations were encountering the exact same challenges. For instance, a cancer patient who felt his body had failed him and a woman cheated on by her husband both struggled with the core weight of betrayal. To boot, both shared a common set of strategies for survival. As humans, we crave control and certainty, especially regarding how we’ll feel as things unfold. We tend to forget that we are fluid; we greatly underestimate how much we will change. When life is upended, it doesn't just create chaos—it opens the door to reconceive our self-identity. Through this work, Dr. Shankar discovered a universal thread in the human experience of change. We all carry similar lessons that earn us hard-won wisdom. To get the best "data," she combined long-form interviewing with the hard science of how the mind works. Her goal was to encourage us to draw from our own inner well of wisdom during life’s toughest moments. That mission culminated in her "unputdownable" New York Times bestseller, The Other Side of Change. If you are currently in a whirlpool of change, biting your nails about the future, or desperately clinging to an old version of yourself, this guide is for you. While reading these lump-in-the-throat stories—ranging from gut-wrenching to joyously weep-worthy—I realized how similar my own growth opportunities were to theirs, even if my story looked different. Imagine finding comfort in the constant evolution that disruption brings. It takes unwavering determination, but even a "mustard seed of belief" will do. Knowing that a massive shift can thrust you into a new reality provides astonishing insights. That new world becomes the motivation needed to activate the strength within. Dare to expect transformation in extraordinary ways, no matter how dire the circumstances. You’ll feel empowered by the reality that you are going to change in the future, just as you can look back and see you’ve already changed considerably in the past. As our doctor puts it: “You will become new people on the other side of change in ways we are capable of shaping… I’ve become far more curious about who I can be on the other side of change.” ... show more

  • Shedding Light on Resilience
Format: Hardcover
For me, A Slight Change of Plans captures resilience as the courage to keep moving forward even when the future no longer looks familiar. As someone who has had to navigate a traumatic change in my own life, I deeply appreciated how each story is paired with a meaningful lesson, making the book feel both personal and universal. Maya Shankar reminds us of the healing power of storytelling, using her platform to elevate others’ stories with compassion and care. The book is thoughtful, validating, and deeply comforting, especially for anyone navigating uncertainty or change. Rather than feeling like a traditional self-help book, the advice is imparted through stories of every day people dealing with incredibly difficult circumstances.. The structure is one of its greatest strengths. Each chapter stands on its own while seamlessly weaving together scientific research, personal reflection, and lived experience of the people who stories she tells. These stories are intimate and authentically honest that help to reframe one's life when it is dramatically altered. ... show more

  • Absolutely transformative — a must-read for anyone facing change!
Format: Hardcover
One of the most powerful and insightful books I’ve ever read. Maya Shankar has crafted something rare, a book that is deeply wisdom-filled, scientifically grounded, and profoundly human. From the very first page, I felt like I was being guided by someone who truly understands what it feels like to have life shift beneath your feet. What makes this book exceptional is how it weaves real stories, cutting-edge science, and compassionate guidance into a narrative that is uplifting and practical. I laughed, I reflected, and yes, I even paused to take notes... this isn’t just inspiring, it’s useful. Her writing has a calm, reassuring voice that makes even the toughest ideas feel accessible and hopeful. If you’re in the midst of transition, or want to grow your capacity to navigate uncertainty with grace and courage, this book is an experience. I recommend it to everyone I know! ... show more
