I once had a copy of the first edition of this book and loaned it out--of course it was never returned. The second edition is updated with even more information. Dale Clemens was not only a first rate rod builder, but was also the owner of what was, at the time the largest rod building supply business in the country. The book has a lot of information on rod components tested by the company before it was offered for sale in their catalog. Some of the information is dated, but most of it is still germane today. Dated but solid info. The author's style is a bit florid but when he gets down to the technical stuff, it's well and clearly written. While it is an "advanced" book, it is definitely not out of reach of beginners and would save a lot of them some time learning if they read it early on.

I found this book to be a thorough treatise on the subject matter, and a required reference for the serious rod crafter. Easy to read and most procedures are clearly detailed, although more illustrations could be useful at times. Lacks detail in the selection and purchasing options of products and components, as offered by the various major manufacturers (e.g., fails to explain the Fuji guide code, as well as the different Aftco big game guides), and does not include a list of sources for the products. This was purchased as a replacement to the one I purchased in the 1970's that was lost. It is the "bible" for people who want to build their own custom fishing poles.
