  • Very disappointing in numerous ways
Definitely not recommended. It does little more than tell what a milling machine does. For those wishing to learn even the basics, this is not sufficient. Furthermore, all dimensions are metric. The author informs us that because HE has switched to metrics he will not provide English measurement equivalents, even though this could be done very simply by including traditional equivalents in parenthesis. So, for the American user whose equipment, tools, and experience are all Imperial he intentionally makes this book an exercise in frustration even beyond its basic failings. There is nothing on the cover or in the blurb that indicates it's all metric so the purchaser only learns this as he begins to read. Very disappointing. Do not buy. ... show more

  • Judge this book by its cover, not its size.
It is a book for the home machinist; just as the title states. Fortunately, I did not buy a mill before having a chance to read this book, which is the target audience. It guided me through some of the ins and outs of having various size machines before making a purchase. The best part would probably be the tooling recommendations. This will help quite a few decide what is necessary instead of what is convenient and and in some cases what tooling materials to avoid depending on what machine capabilities you have. I would recommend this to anyone from a total noob *using Google-fu to fill in the blanks; to an intermediate home machinists. Professionals might find some of the appendix helpful for tool geometries but any good machinist handbook will already contain this content. Good read. Mostly to the point. Nice size (especially for light reading while traveling), well printed and very well illustrated. ... show more

  • The Milling Machine for Home Machinists by Harold Hall
I am not a machinist and buying this book, based on what I wanted from it and the cost, I do feel it presents a good basic understanding of the Milling Machine and it's use. This book provides the necessary information and explanations of the machine and it's basic operation. I gives the reader the basic layout of the milling machine, it's use and operation. This is what I needed to know. I wanted to have a basic explanation of the machine, some information on setup and use and some information on milling tools and their use. This book gets me started to understand what the milling machine entails, it's operation and it's use. I feel it is worth the price paid to have as a reference book. ... show more

  • Very elementary but gets better
This is a revision to a review I submitted earlier (below). After I read farther into the book I found the info I wanted. This book is actually very good for the home/newer machinist. You have to get past the beginning where it talks about buying and setting up a mill (that part looks like it was written for the person with ZERO experience). Original review - I wanted a book on how to set up and run a milling machine. (I have a Smithy combination machine). This book is more about what milling machines do and how to select a milling machine. Not what I was looking for. The book is fine for what it does but not what I wanted. ... show more

  • I bought this because it's supposed to have instructions for building a certain jig.
I bought this because it's supposed to have instructions for building a certain jig that I thought was in Tool and Cutter Sharpening but wasn't. That book said it was in this book. The tool I was looking for was "Advanced Grinding Rest." And guess what? It wasn't. While this book has some information in it that will help someone just starting out in machining it wasn't what I needed. I think this would help a beginner a lot but I gave it 3 stars because I was misled by what book the jig instructions were in. I almost ordered the wrong book again until I went to the authors web site and was able to determine what book it was in. ... show more

  • Missed return by a day = Public-Review instead (srry)
I purchased the 'metal lathe manual as well; In gathering them to send back, I realize I'm a day late.. So, reason I am returning (the one still eligible), Is that I honestly thought these would be a bit more technical /w various reference charts, etc -And these are just-Not that; Dated &Very-Basic (nor are they really intended for home machining equipment either..) Find yourself a current copy of "MACHINARYS HANDBOOK" (is my suggestion) ... show more

  • Good book, but needs to be supplemented with other sources of knowledge
I have no experience with machining and I purchased this book to supplement the basic knowledge I gained online. The book is good, but not perfect, some of the descriptions are not clear to the reader especially if you have not seen a milling machine in reality. A perfect example is when the author explains the difference between different types of milling machines. I really was not clear what the difference was between some of the models when I was done reading and re-reading that section several times. ... show more

  • Four Stars
Likely the most useful of the series. Overall quite helpful and replete with detailed photos.
