WOW! This collection of songs includes so many from school, it simply blows me away. It includes good piano versions to learn and multiple verses on many of the songs. It reminds me of songbooks we used in school in the 50s. I also love the old-time (maybe 1920s vintage) illustrations. This is an excellent book for home school parents and teachers to augment their cultural and historical lessons as well as teaching fundamental music. While the historical information behind these songs isn't included, that information can be gleaned from the internet. If the editors of this book decided to include it in subsequent editions, it would make this a spectacular product, but ... my goodness ... it's already spectacular right now. ... show more

Love this collection of kids' songs! I play and sing them with my little daughters (age 2 and 5) every day, and they really enjoy picking out new songs to learn together. The cute, vintage- looking illustrations help them to decide which songs to choose. The arrangements are ideal for singalongs. Most are pretty simple, but some of the lullabies and holiday songs have juicier chords to keep things interesting. A few of the arrangements have slightly different melody lines than the versions I learned as a kid, but we don't mind. The book is full of childhood favorites, and also some beautiful old songs that I hadn't been familiar with before. All in all, it's a perfect addition to my music collection, and a favorite of my kids. ... show more

The contents of this delightful book will keep you and your little ones entertained for hours. Many of our favorites, like This Old Man, and My Grandfather's Clock and Old McDonald are here. The piano score is easy enough for a medium beginning player. There are guitar chords as well. Lullabies, silly songs, traditional favorites, you name it, you will probably find it here. The drawback is the binding. Why they won't use a plastic spiral binding is beyond me. All music books should be bound that way so they lay flat on the music stand.     • Perfect song book to play and sing with your kids
Format: Paperback
I ordered this with my fingers crossed and got lucky- it's wonderful, just what I wanted. It has an enormous variety of kids' songs, over 200 of them, such as "Farmer in the Dell," "Eeensy Weensy Spider,"etc., but it also throws in more adult songs that you might like to teach your child such as "Kumbaya," "It's a Grand Old Flag," "Down in the Valley," Oh, Susanna," etc. Terrific and imaginative selection, and it also has holiday songs- pretty much every category you can think of. The sheet music is just right- simple melody lines with just enough chords. I suppose this book would be good for children who are learning to play piano, but we bought it for songs to sing with our 3 year old. She sits at the piano and kind of tries to play along with us, but mostly she just sings and adores flipping the pages and going from one song to another. Best of all, the book is easy to press back and hold steady while you play, where so many large compilation books of sheet music won't stay still and close up on you when you play.     • Not a good book for beginners
Format: Paperback
This is likely a great book if you are good at piano. There are tons of songs and occasional pictures which make it a fun book to play with kids. My biggest complaint is that they take very easy songs and make them difficult by putting them in weird keys. For example, I can easily play the basic version of Brahm's Lullaby, but in this book they have decided to insert a version with 4 # (sharps), making it much more difficult. Majority of songs are like this, where they have taken basic, simple songs and made them difficult. If you are a beginning pianist, I'd recommend a different book. ... show more

I love this book! It has large dark print, lovely sketches, spiral bound, and contains wonderful songs with several verses. It is mainly intended for the piano but most of the songs also have chords that can be played on a stringed instrument. I'm still at the beginning Intermediate stage playing a baritone uke, and the children songs are ones I remember well so they lend themselves to detecting the different changes in chords. I simplify the piano chords if I can't play them and they have added a richer melody to songs I have played in Beginning Uke books. Bought it used and not a mark in it! ... show more

I was babysitting for a friend and she had this book open on her piano. Several others have mentioned how nice it is for piano, but it's also great if you're a guitar player, even if you're not an expert guitar player! As others have noted, the arrangements are basic enough that beginners (like myself) can play most of these tunes on the first try. It has just about every children song you can think of - from Eensy weensy spider to some nice patriotic ones. If you spend even a little time with children, this book will help you fill your time with music. Great for parents, daycares, camps, caregivers, etc. I came home to order a copy for myself right away. ... show more
