Description

This book will help you troubleshoot your laptop problem and take the most cost effective approach to repairing it, getting it repaired, or replacing it. But the troubleshooting process depends on your observations of the symptoms and your willingness to keep your mind open to solutions other than your first impression, or those suggested by friends who say they had "exactly the same problem." If the laptop is still usable but acts up, pay close attention to when and where it acts up, whether the problem always occurs after the laptop has been moved, or shut-down for the night, or running all day. Even the weather plays a part in troubleshooting some problems, so try to read through all of the general troubleshooting sections, just to get a feel for the things that go wrong with different components. If it doesn't make you into a laptop hypochondriac, it will make you a stronger diagnostician. You may notice we don't talk about the razzle-dazzle technology of computer components in this book. The reason is simple. You can't upgrade or repair your laptop by using the latest technology available, nor can you save money by repairing it with older technology rescued from a random laptop at the recycling center. You have to use the exact parts your laptop was engineered to work with. Hard drives and memory are the only replaceable parts that are often compatible between models of a similar vintage. For some readers, the lack of an illustrated discussion on how hard drives store data bits will take some fun out of the book, but that knowledge can't help you when it comes to troubleshooting. There are plenty of books with beautiful color illustrations that try to explain basic computer technology, but they do so at the expense of helping you solve real laptop problems. Two final notes about using this workbook. First, if your laptop is in warranty, it doesn't make any sense to take it apart in hopes of fixing something yourself. This book can still help you troubleshoot the problem to determine if it's a software setting or incorrect use, which may save you sending the laptop out for repair. Second, feel free to cut out the twelve flowcharts in the second half of the book and staple them together. This will save on page flipping as you read the expanded explanations of the decision symbols. It's a workbook, not English literature. The Laptop Repair Workbook includes twelve full page troubleshooting flowcharts for laptop hardware troubleshooting and explanatory text for every decision point. The book begins with an introduction to basic laptop terminology, troubleshooting procedures, and cost decisions. Read more

  • Great troubleshooting guide
This book is well thought out, It will help get you past the what if's and figure out what to focus you're attention on. It makes sense to follow a flow chart because it is all in order of symptom's too resolution. It is a logical way too approach diagnostic's and is an art in it's own right. You will most likely read through it the first time and then keep it as a reference guide for troubleshooting afterwards. Simplified explanations with direct answers too get the repair done. Note: this is not a detailed complexity walkthrough but rather a time is money guide that will save you hour's of lost time and get yiu on track without having to look into the what if's. 🍻 ... show more

  • Simplicity at its best
This book is simply written. No pictures, no technical stuff. It is a good book for beginners, but even an experienced person like me finds merit in this book. Most of my PC repairs are desktop units and this book is straightforward and covers the basics of what could be wrong with a laptop computer. I particularly like the flow-chart approach and the sometimes comical responses of the author. ... show more

  • A must for laptop owners.
This book is NOT a repair manual, it is a trouble shooting manual. It gives an owner whose laptop is not working correctly (or at all) with a means to assess what is wrong with his unit. If you do repair a laptop, especially an older one, it may be so expensive that you are economically better off replacing it. It is designed to allow an owner to make that repair or replace decision. The average laptop has a life expectancy of three years even if you don't drop it or lose it. Beyond that you are living on borrowed time. Unlike desktops, laptops are quite difficult to repair because their innards are very complex and they use proprietary parts that are only available from the original vendor and after a couple of years may no longer be available at all. Now, let me mention one thing that is widely neglected. While backups are important with ANY computer, they are vital with laptops, especially those used for business. To have your unit lost or stolen without up to date backups is the stuff of nightmares, it is economic suicide. Even if you still have the laptop, getting vital business records off a damaged hard drive is excruciating and expensive. Backup early and often. . ... show more

  • Excellent
The best resource/guide out there! I know how to fix notebooks and PCs but sometimes you could be lost or not on the right track and that's when a book like this one comes in handy. Also, the author links each troubleshooting step in the book to great pics posted on his website. The website also gives you some extra valuable tips. I highly recommend this book to anyone. Why? Because you don't know EVERYTHING and ANYBODY can make mistakes and need a little help or guidance. Great job! ... show more

  • Nice!
Due to all of the integrated parts of a laptop, this is a nice way to get a good starting point in diagnostics. Very easy to use and very specific flowcharts!

  • Quite helpful
Quite helpful, both in specific tips, and in general approach. I have kept it in my pc repair bag for my business for 5 years. It's still in there when I arrive onsite to a customer's location.
