The Impossible Fortune: a Thursday Murder Club Mystery is written by Richard Osman. It is Book #5 in the Thursday Murder Club series. It’s been a very quiet year for the Murder Club. Joyce is busy with Joanna’s upcoming wedding. Elizabeth is grieving. Ron is dealing with family troubles and Ibrahim is still providing therapy to his favorite criminal Connie, who in turn is mentoring Tia, a young girl whom she met in prison. This is an exceptional 5th installment in this (very) British adventure of friendship, extremely creative aging, humor, murder and mayhem. Whoever thought senior retirement village living could be this much fun. There is danger, to be sure, but it is quickly taken care of. I love the conversations, the banter between the core group members. The red herrings are endless, yet all come together in the end. LOVE this series! Love the writing style, the characters, and the storylines. Have read and enjoyed them all, especially once you “get to know” the characters. The very first in the series was a little harder to get into at first, as the reader is introduced to and gets to “know” the various characters. I would consider this series to be light reading but very entertaining. Having said all of that, I have not finished reading this latest offering, but so far so good! ... show more

As summer begins in earnest in the far north, it was great fun to read once again about the Murder Club. I was surprised at Osman’s insights to mothers and daughters and their relationships. I imagine they are different from those of sons and mothers or sons and fathers. Good reading, many good clues, no cheap suspects, and not every thread tied up at the end. Nice touch having Ron’s favorite James Bond Pierce Brosnan. Watch the movie if that doesn’t make sense ... show more

Another book in this series that is leaving me with all the emotions. Yes I was already crying in chapter 4. I just love these characters SO much because they are flawed and down to Earth, but absolutely hilarious and smart and I have the best time following them around. Who else would be excited to learn about a bomb at a wedding?! Who else would make me sob because of the intensity of a friendship. Who else would write about the most outrageous things in their diary along with what they had for dinner? The writing is absolutely gorgeous and completely captivating in the coziest way. This plot felt so different and yet perfectly in the style of this crime solving club. I was equal parts stressed and smiling ear to ear. These characters feel like family and I cannot get enough. The ending was completely shocking and I read it twice just to absorb it all. I already miss them! ... show more
