  • Amazing!!
The media could not be loaded. This record made me realize why Madonna is still relevant!! It’s a fantastic sounding album with some of her greatest songs. Love the album sleeves with photos of her early days!! If you were born in the 80’s and you have a vinyl collection, you must own this album!

  • Get into the groove!--Outstanding greatest hits compilation.
I have a theory on "greatest hits" albums that goes something like this: the more substantial an artist is, and the greater their albums are, the more pointless their greatest hits compilations are likely to be (Just check out the essentially inane greatest hits albums by Stevie Wonder or The Beatles to see what I'm talking about). And, the inverse is also true, the less substantial the artist, the more important their greatest hits compilations are. "Greatest Hits" compilations can be great for introducing someone to artists that they are not familiar with, but with whole albums you get to see the artists' original vision, and I've found that they are usually more rewarding for the listener in the long run (the good ones anyway). But for some artists, the "greatest hits" compilation may be the only thing in their catalog worth buying (there are quite a few artists out there that have a few great songs on really crappy albums). Now that I'm done pontificating, I must say that that is not exactly the case with Madonna because she does have more in her catalog that could be worth discovering, and as an artist she is often more genuine than she normally gets credit for. Yet still, this collection is likely the best buy in her catalog. This compilation pretty much plays like a good album (helped greatly by both the fact that the songs are sequenced in chronological order, and the fact that the production qualities are so similar throughout). Few would argue against Madonna's cultural significance (she is likely the biggest pop star of the 80's, challenged only by Michael Jackson), and despite her tendency to use controversy to get attention, she is actually a decent songwriter (I don't care what anyone says :-). But, unless you are a diehard album completist (with a strong interest in Madonna's work) or you're really into her work from the 90's and beyond (which I think, with just a few exceptions, has actually grown more and more insubstantial, despite the fact that it supposes to have more would-be "artistic cred" on the surface) you will likely be content with having this as the only selection from her catalog. As I said earlier, I actually think that some of her material is more substantial than she normally gets credit for (unlike the complete drivel being made by the bubblegum pop starlets who have followed and tried to emulate her), but no serious musician or music fan would ever mistake her for a monumental artist. But, every artist doesn't have to be, and her contemplative songs can still be quite touching (Live to Tell) and her up-tempo stuff can be a whole lot of fun (Holiday!)or even a cross between the two ("Borderline" would be a perfect example of this). I've heard many of her 80's albums and they're all at least solid efforts. This album takes the best from each of them (save for maybe just a few omissions) and puts them on a single CD It's a plus that this compilation includes the slightly remixed version of "Express Yourself" which is actually superior to the album version as far as I'm concerned, but the same can't be said for "Like a Prayer"-the album version of this track is much better. And, the fact that her funkiest dance song ever, "Into the Groove" from the soundtrack for "Desperately Seeking Susan", is included sure doesn't hurt this album's purchase worthiness (I do however agree with the reviewer who said that "True Blue" and "Who's that Girl" should have been included here in place of "Justify My Love" and "Rescue Me", which should have been placed on her next album instead). If you have a passing interest in Madonna's work, or in 80's pop culture in general, then you should definitely give this collection a listen. ... show more

  • Immaculate Madonna's first Best of...
I was in high school when her first self titled album "Madonna" came out in 1983. It was a fabulous album, although it had only a few radio hits on it. Madonna was on her way to becoming the most prolific '80s pop icon of the decade and the years to come. For this release, it pretty much sums up the '80s decade for her and her biggest hits up to 1990's "Vogue" which is included here. A dvd similar to this title also came out and that included a "Live" version of the music video from the 1990 MTV awards show. It would be her first dvd of her hits to come with more in the years to follow. I would recommend getting this as it has two new songs, "Rescue Me" and "Justify My Love". Personally, I find her early work in the '80s to be the best she has ever done and if you have all her '80s cds, you will know what I am talking about! Songs include ~ HOLIDAY LUCKY STAR BORDERLINE LIKE A VIRGIN MATERIAL GIRL CRAZY FOR YOU INTO THE GROOVE (not the original version though) LIVE TO TELL PAPA DON'T PREACH OPEN YOUR HEART LA ISLA BONITA LIKE A PRAYER EXPRESS YOURSELF CHERISH VOGUE JUSTIFY MY LOVE (New Song) RESCUE ME (New Song) ..not on any other CD. ... show more

  • The Best of The Best
The Immaculate Collection does what many other pop best-ofs haven't done and does it incredibly well. It creates a new mix of all the hits, making them all sonically cohesive. It all ties well together, nothing feels out of place, and best of all, no song loses their essence. By remixing the songs to this extent, this collection doesn't fall flat like other Greatest Hits albums may. It's an album, not just a collection of songs sloppily tossed together. In addition, fans should buy this even though they may have the original albums with the songs featured here. The Immaculate Collection creates a heady experience no Madonna (or pop) fan should miss out on. The two new additions punctuate the album well. "Justify My Love" belongs on this effort. It offers the direction she was headed with the future Erotica album in an effortless way. And here's a shocker: there's an underrated song on this album: "Rescue Me." It closes the album on a high note with some of Madonna's best lyrics: "you bring me to my knees/while I'm scratching out the eyes/of a world I want to conquer, and deliver, and despise." It features some of her best singing too. Madonna, her team of producers, songwriters, mixers, etc. should rejoice. They've created one of the best pop albums of all time. ... show more
