Description

From USA Today Bestselling Author Holly Renee, comes the second book in the scorching romantasy series with enthralling secrets, impassioned enemies, and luring tension. Verena was the lost princess of Marmoris, the very thing we had spent our entire lives looking for, and I had let her go.The lingering taste of her mixed with the deep ache in my chest over her betrayal haunted my days and nights. I knew she was hiding something, but her secrets were far more treacherous than I could have imagined.Though I wished my own betrayal hadn’t been so bitter on my tongue. Now my dreams are haunted with the way her deep blue eyes looked up at me in shock when I revealed I knew her truth. The way I crave for her to look at me now as I hunt for her.Me, along with half of the rebellion. If my father finds her before me, there is no telling what he will do to her.And even though she’s the little traitor I’d always thought she was, I couldn’t allow him to find her.But his orders were clear. The princess is to be taken by the rebellion or she would be taken by the gods. I don’t know which is worse. She is the heir to our kingdom, the daughter of the cruel king who was responsible for my mother’s death, and the key to winning our rebellion.I vowed to my father that I would find her, the one person I wish I didn’t have to.Verena is the hunted heir. But more than anything, she is mine. Read more

  • Forbidden Romance & Adventure & Political Intrigue, Oh My!
Format: Kindle
The Hunted Heir dives straight into the action, picking up where the jaw-dropping cliffhanger ending of The Veiled Kingdom left off—damn you, Dacre. The pulse-pounding adventure and sizzling romance will leave you breathless, furiously turning pages, and staying up way past your bedtime. And speaking of romance—buckle up, baby, because you are in for one hell of a ride. Verena is on the run once more. Barely escaping the hidden city and Dacre's stunning betrayal—which still lingers like an open wound—she must alone navigate Marmoris' treacherous landscape. Her true identity as the princess is no longer a secret; the rebellion is closing in, and her father's soldiers scour the kingdom, intent on capturing her. With no one to trust, Verena knows only two things for certain: she's a hunted woman, and her only hope for survival lies in reaching the ocean on the southern coast. She must find a ship and escape Marmoris before the rebellion, the king, or Dacre find her. For Dacre, letting Verena escape has created a maelstrom of problems. The lost princess, the rightful heir to Marmoris, is now a traitor—and he set her free. His father is hell-bent on exploiting Verena to further his own ambitions with the king, but Dacre's allegiance to the rebellion and his father is faltering. His need to protect Verena, his little traitor, burns hotter with every passing moment. Logic dictates he should despise her, yet he'll stop at nothing to keep her safe from the forces closing in around them. Holly Renee's writing is as captivating as ever, drawing you into a world of magic, political intrigue, and forbidden love. But what truly makes The Hunted Heir shine is the characters. Verena is a strong, complex heroine, desperate to find freedom and protect those she cares about. Dacre is a brooding, passionate hero, struggling to reconcile the loyalty he should have to his father's rebellion and his intense feelings for Verena. Their relationship is fraught with tension, and their chemistry is off the charts—a delicious mix of anger, passion, and hurt that adds depth to their already complicated relationship and makes every scene they share sizzle. With all that said, I wish the book had been longer. I devoured it in a few hours and was left wanting more. The cliffhanger ending DESTROYED me. First, I was sobbing uncontrollably, then I stared blankly at a wall for a bit, and now I'm partially dead inside. But even after being emotionally scarred (again—this woman and her cliffhangers), Queen Holly has cemented my devotion to this series. I need to know what happens to Verena and Dacre. Can they overcome their pasts and forge a future together? Luckily, The Rivaled Crown, book 3 in The Veiled Kingdom series, is coming to a Kindle near you on March 18, 2025. Would I recommend it? Absolutely! But only if you've read the first book in the series. With its captivating characters, breakneck plot, and STEAMY romance, The Hunted Heir will entertain and delight you. Be prepared for a wild ride full of twists and turns, a healthy dose of angsty groveling, and a major cliffhanger ending that will leave you desperate to know what happens next. NOTE: The Hunted Heir is the sequel to The Veiled Kingdom and the second book in Holly Renee's Veiled Kingdom series. To avoid spoilers, this series must be read in order. Thank you to Valentine PR, and of course, Holly Renee for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. ... show more

  • Couldn't wait for it!
Format: Kindle
I couldn’t wait to get my hands on The Hunted Heir. The story was a fantastic follow up to The Veiled Kingdom, but it left me only wanting more. This story is filled with danger, double crossing, secrets, and betrayal. Verena is on the run with danger on her heels and also all around her as the king’s guards hunt her. Dacre is also hunting her, but for very different reasons. As he discovers more about his father’s plans, he must decide if he’s on the right side of things or if he should choose his own path. I loved when Dacre and Verena reconnected, how their story and romance unfolded. And the answer regarding Verena magic is still tantalizingly out of reach, but her magic is even more intriguing. This Romantasy gives you so much and leaves you wanting more. It is light on steam, but heavy on plot. While little time passes in the story, it is still fast paced and keeps readers on their toes. Loyalties are tested and declarations made. Then the fast paced thrilling conclusion will leave you on a cliffhanger and desperately wanting more. I have really enjoyed this series despite the characters being young and the story a little outside my lane. I only wish it were finished so I could binge the whole thing. Needless to say, I will patiently wait for the next book in the series because I need to know what happens next. ... show more

  • Great Writing, Short Book
Format: Kindle
The writing in this book is amazing. You can truly become wrapped up in the world and characters. This second book takes off right where The Veiled Kingdom ended, and you instantly feel like you’re there with them. It is a very captivating and engaging piece of work. That being said, I was expecting much more from this second book. It was so short, and again left in a huge cliff hanger. If this book were a couple hundred pages longer, it would easily be a 5 star rating. But the wait for this tiny book that didn’t leave us much was almost not worth it. ALMOST. It is still a great book, I only wish we had more. ... show more

  • That ending is.. That ending is..
Format: Kindle
4.5 ⭐ 3 🌶 I was so excited about this book. It probably one of my favorites. The author does well without over placing the backstory and fills with action and banter/dialogue. Which for me is good because too much can be boring and take away from the story. However, in this book I am not sure if less was a good or bad thing. For example, that ending was not the big ending or cliff I thought it would be. The story itself is only 208 page which I do not think was enough to cover the whole story as some parts were rushed. It also would've been nice to have received previews of the next book not of another series (A Kingdom of Salt and Stars - so tired of a blank of blank and blank). We are left hanging with that ending AND has to wait a while for the next one? Not fair. Spoilers below so do not read if you don't want it ruined for you. That aside I do love the story. Seeing Verena (Nyra) running through the woods as she was just used and reading Dacre side afterwards was all the things we need to put our anger of him aside. However, I found myself upset that Verena would trust Eiran so easily, like girl you just was betrayed and placed out like nothing (her words not mine). I would've appreciated having more time with Dacre once he did catch her and had his best friend and sister catch up to them then maybe she gets captured? Because the ending we got I'm not sure about. One part of me is glad she got her powers and they are mates the other half feelings like what was the point if they could not conquer all? I guess for the plot it had to be this way but the mates thing felt forced/rushed because the time Dacre and Verena spent together was rushed and did not last long. I think any book that could evoke emotional turbulence is a good book. I was mad, sad, shocked, happy, and mad all over again. When they finally had the conversation about him using her, it gave me so much satisfaction. There intensity and fury was felt. "You Mean the name you lied to me about over and over again." "Was it his idea for you to make me 🌶 before you told me you knew who I really was?" I was like FINALLY!! Then to see them love .. "Like salt in the sea, you have become ingrained in every part of me, and I have been drowning in my regrets" "A kingdom torn in born, a world turned to ash".. "But with my soul, I the worship" It was so worthy of a read! Dacre character development was the very best. He stepped out of his fathers shadow like the brave knight and he was ready to risk it all for his little traitor. "She was the heir to the kindgom, the princess to the king who killed my mother, but none of that made her any less mine" "You're a coward, father" Giving very much "touch her and 💀" Oh my goodness, do not get me started on Eiran. It has pissed me off. I wish we could've seen more of Kai and Wren I was hoping that they would have snuck out and came to the rescue as in the beginning of the book I thought that's where this book was going to be head when Dacre spoke with them before his father asked him to go with him to find her. I am hoping for the next book they get together and try to save Verena but we shall see. ... show more

  • I need more! Can’t wait for book 3
Format: Kindle
4.5 to 5 stars ⭐️ Considering it had been about 130 days since I read The Veiled Kingdom, I really wanted to savor The Hunted Heir. However, the cliffhanger from TVK made me consume this book. It completely surpassed my expectations. Holly Renee knows how to constantly deliver action using masterful writing that transports the reader right into the story. I appreciated that the author dove more into building the enchanting world that Dacre and Verena are fighting to survive in. With book 2, Holly Renee has complicated the two-sided world of kingdom vs rebellion. Right from the start, readers can expect character growth along with views on what the corruption of power and greed looks like from both sides. Verena’s feelings on trust and her effort to understand the world around her (as well as her place in it) is very relatable. Holly Renee’s description of a sorrow caused by a loss that never heals is poetic. Her writing about the cost of power and greed is truthful. The author writes in a very understanding way. I never feel overwhelmed by any of the world building and terminology used. I would love to see more world building actually. A couple of things that could be furthered explained are the religious systems, kingdom histories, and surrounding countries or lands. However, the storyline was not lacking without this information. I throughly enjoyed what we did learn in book 2 and suspect there will be more world building in book 3. The spice and romance between the FMC and MMC was just right. Not over done but not lacking. It fit my preference. I’m deeply invested in the characters and cannot wait for the final book in the trilogy! NOTE!!!!! Be sure to read the trigger warnings. There are topics that could be sensitive to some readers. ... show more

  • On the run On the run
Format: Kindle
Verena is on the run from both the rebellion and the king’s men, but which is worse if the catch up to her? Dacre did the only thing he could when he father discovered Verena’s identity, he made it seem like he hated her and kicked her out. It was the only way he could protect her. Now she is out in the wilds, being hunted, alone, and powerless. He must find her before anyone else does. This had a much better pace than The Veiled Kingdom. There was a lot more action, though it was still semi slow. Verena is at war with her own emotions. She doesn’t know who she can trust and no matter how hard she tries, she can’t stop wanting Dacre. The love hate relationship these two have is something else. They are like magnets, drawn to each other but being stuck together drives them insane. I became much more invested towards the end of the story, however, the way Dacre was speaking just didn’t seem like it was consistent with him from the rest of the story. All in all, 3.5 stars ... show more

  • Runaway princess, forbidden love, deadly secrets.
Format: Audiobook
📖 The Hunted Heir by Holly Renee ★★★★½ (4.5/5) In a world where stars birth destinies and gods craft lovers from celestial dust, Holly Renee's "The Hunted Heir" unfolds like a midnight confession—raw, inevitable, and impossible to turn away from. The story of Verena, a princess who chose starvation in freedom over suffocation in luxury, resonates in that hollow space between your ribs where forgotten dreams live. Her journey from royal prisoner to rebel in disguise isn't just about physical escape but about the soul's desperate search for authenticity. Even as she hides her true identity among those who would kill her for it, she paradoxically finds herself—a beautiful contradiction that speaks to anyone who's ever worn a mask to survive. And then there's Darce—suspicion with a heartbeat, a hunter whose prey has somehow become his north star. Their relationship builds like a storm, clouds gathering long before the first lightning strike. "The gods made you for me. Carved you from the stars themselves until I could no longer bear to gaze up at the sky without longing for you." Words that should feel impossible between two people with such history, yet somehow feel earned through their shared struggle. What captivated me most was how their push-and-pull dynamic creates an electric current through every page. Darce's conflicted emotions—hunting someone he's simultaneously drawn to—creates a tension so palpable I found myself holding my breath during their encounters. Their slow-burn romance isn't just about physical restraint but about the gradual dismantling of walls built by betrayal and circumstance. The rebellion storyline perfectly mirrors Verena's personal transformation, creating layers of meaning that elevate this beyond typical fantasy fare. As she discovers her strength among those who should be her enemies, we witness how shared struggle forges deeper bonds than blood ever could. The secondary characters aren't merely decorative—they're essential threads in this tapestry of survival and belonging. Holly Renee's writing pulls you through the night, chapters blurring as 2 AM arrives unnoticed. Her world-building is immersive without being overwhelming, her magic system clear without tedious explanation. But it's the emotional undercurrent—the constant question of what we owe to others versus what we owe ourselves—that makes this story linger like an echo. 📦 What to Expect ✨ Epic Fantasy 💖 Slow Burn Romance 🔥 Grumpy/Sunshine Dynamic 🤯 Complex Politics & Power Struggles 💔 Deep Emotional Growth 🦴 Magical Beasts or Sentient Magic ⚔️ A Lead Who Fights for More Than Survival 📚 Book Tags Keywords: Dark Fantasy, Magic, Romance, Political Intrigue, Found Family, Survival, War Tropes: Grumpy/Sunshine, Enemies to Reluctant Allies, Found Family, Mentor/Protegé, Slow Burn, Power Couple Triggers: Slavery, Violence, War Themes, Grooming (discussed), Sexual Assault (mentioned, not shown), Emotional Abuse, PTSD 🎯 Final Thoughts For those who seek stories where survival demands more than breath—where it requires courage, sacrifice, and the terrifying vulnerability of trust—this series awaits. • Enemies to Lovers Romantasy
Format: Kindle
👑 Romantasy 👑 Morally Grey MMC 👑 Enemies to Lovers 👑 Forbidden Romance 👑 Dual POV 👑 One Bed 👑 Groveling 👑 Second Chance SUMMARY: Verena, the lost princess of Marmoris has been on the run for much of her life. She began to find some solace amongst those in rebellion against her father, but her secrets have come to light and now she must run for her life. From her father, the King, from the Rebellion and now from Dacre, who betrayed her in the most unfeeling way possible. Dacre, the son of the Rebellion and potential usurper of the Marmoris throne must choose between his family, the rebellion or the girl that he betrayed. REVIEW: The Hunted Heir picks up right where the cliffhanger in the Veiled Kingdom left off. That cliffhanger was so infuriating and heart-breaking that I was immediately invested in book 2. There is bit of action and suspense to keep you engaged, but in my opinion, Dacre alone was enough to keep me interested. 😏 The banter / dialogue between the main characters is top notch and the tension is very entertaining. I did wish for a bit more from the redemption arc, but the major cliff-hanger at the end both enraged me, but will absolutely keep me coming back for more. This unfinished series is such a fun, steamy and fast paced read. I absolutely devoured the first book, the Veiled Kingdom and did the same with this book. Can’t wait for Book #3 to find out what happens next! ... show more
