  • Pages are colorful - 64 pages is hardly "COMPLETE"
I will give it 2 stars because the pages are in color but honestly the TITLE is longer than the book! There are other really good books out there and this just isn't one of them. "A Complete Course in Techniques, Subjects and Styles"??? Seriously? I guess it is geared for youngsters in elementary school just starting out. ... show more

  • Misleading Title-- Neither "Fundamental" Nor "Complete"
I purchased this at Half Priced Books, for $5.99, with little to no inspection, trusting that the "Fundamentals" in the the title really meant that and it would be a good nuts and bolts oil painting book. Not! It should really be titled "How To Use Alkyd Media To Paint Like Barrington Barber." From the book: "I always use oil paints ready-mixed with alkyd medium, which speeds up the rate of drying. . ." (Barber, p. 15). Further: "MEDIUMS The most popular medium is linseed oil. . . I don't use it myself because the paint in the tube has enough oil in it already as far as I'm concerned." (Barber, p. 17). So. . . for all of you who actually want to learn all that business of "fat over lean" and the use of traditional mediums, this book is a TOTAL BUST, despite the misleading title! Meh! Live and learn-- inspect better before buying. ... show more
