I won't give away plot details, but will say that I enjoy rewatching this film almost as much as when I first saw it when it was released twenty-five years ago. The writing, directing and casting all contribute to making the storyline magical (in my opinion.) The subject here is spouses who use their marriages to climb socially and/or financially. That is relevant to this day. Even with plot changes the subject at a high level will remain relevant because it's people using a relationship to gain something, then dispose of the relationship. Personally, the acting is what keeps drawing me back to rewatch the movie. And the dynamics, of course. As an added bonus the cast of cameo characters, such as Ed Koch and Gloria Steinem, add familiarity to some scenes for folks in my generation who knew them as household names. Of course, there are more, but these two spring to mind because they were in a scene together. And the cast of supporting actors is mind boggling. I don't know what the budget of this film was, but when you add folks like Maggie Smith, Victor Garber, Marcia Gay Harden, Sarah Jessica Parker, J. K. Simmons (to name only a few), you just know that the budget was substantial. Of course twenty-five years ago some of those folks were not exactly household names, but supporting actors like Rob Reiner and Heather Locklear were. And all of the aforementioned, and the ones who I did not name added to the story telling in their own special ways using their distinctive talents. It would be easy to assume that this is a fluff piece that is predictable. It isn't. It is supposed to be a comedy, but it touches on some painful and dark aspects, and the arcs of some of the main characters ended in (to me) surprising ways. Still, it's foremost entertainment, and is a film that I thought highly enough of to replace my scratched copy with a brand new disc. Your mileage may vary.

This is a fun entertaining laid back comedy. When I first saw it, it felt overrated, and I wasn’t all that interested in it as I was watching it. But I stumbled upon it again over the years and realized the film was growing on me to the point that now I love it and see it as a classic. So the advice is if you watch it once and didn’t like it, try watching it again after time has passed. You might be surprised to find that it enjoyable. Of course it’s got a top notch stellar cast from the top players to the supporting players.

The main reason I watched this movie was because Diane Keaton was in it. She did not let me down at all in this movie! Her performance was excellent, as was Goldie Hawn's and Bette Midler's. The casting for the supporting roles of the movie was great. I never thought I'd see such a selfish Stephen Collins, but he was great in this. The story was great as well. When one of the four friends dies, it reunites these college friends. They all reveal to one another that their husbands have left them for younger women. So what do they do? Revenge, of course! I thought the middle of the movie was very good. There was definitely a climax and it was resolved very well. Another thing I loved was the song that was played while Annie (Keaton), Brenda (Bette), and Elise (Hawn) were giving their husbands what they deserved. Now if only I could remember the name of the song! But what it did was it showed that women are just as strong as men, sometimes stronger. I think that is one of the messages that the movie tries to convey to us. I don't know if this is a 'chick flick' or not, but it is leaning in that direction. It's just a great movie overall, in my opinion. Rent it and see for yourself!!

Can someone PLEASE tell me why Elizabeth Berkely has top bill in this movie? With Bette Midler, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn on the bill, why does she even get honorable mention? This is a great movie, full of fun and full of tears. When three former schoolmates (and ex-wives) all find themselves being jerked around by their philandering husbands, they decide to take matters into their own hands and get a little 'first wives' justice. The result is a hilarious comedy where 3 former husbands find out just what slime balls they really are, and first wives don't simply go away when they get a bit old and baggy. Goldie is the best choice for the aging actress, Diane plays the mousy one who can't make a decision, and Bette is the connsumate Jewish housewife who finds herself replaced by a 20 year old bimbo who lives well, while she and her son struggle to make the rent. Maggie Smith lends her considerable talent to this movie, and the result is a hilarious comedy that evey jilted wife whishes she'd thought of. In the end, revenge isn't the sweetest thing, but friendship and outreach to other hurt women is. The music is great and fits each scene, A fun show for all.

This is movie is about women owing their power! Our husbands or ex- husbands may cause us to compromise in order to be in a relationship but they should not destroy who you are. After a break up, remember the strong woman who entered the relationship and find her again when you leave it. No one can make you small unless you allow it!
