Description

The Earth-Sheltered Solar Greenhouse Book is the first to promote the benefits of both passive solar energy and earth sheltering in greenhouse design. This combination results in greenhouses which need no additional heating. The captured sun s energy and that which is stored in the earth is enough for successful year round harvest. Gone are costly heating bills. Gone is the squander of non-renewable energy resources. This is because above-ground greenhouses get natural heat at night from only one side, the floor. They lose heat from the other five sides. The properly designed earth-sheltered greenhouse is naturally warmed at night -- and in the winter -- from five sides and loses heat from only one. The ratio is exactly reversed. This book has it all. It takes you step by step through the construction of an inexpensive greenhouse which may be built with either newly purchased or salvaged building materials for pennies on the dollar. It explains the author s unique Post/Shoring/Polyethylene construction methods and design techniques which Countryside Magazine called Revolutionary... innovative and ingenious...a totally different concept. In its way it is both as simple and as amazingly ingenious as a paperclip. The book deals heavily with design so that you may custom build your own greenhouse perfect for your particular climate and needs. It tells you how to use gravity to warm your winter plants; how to effectively capture and store the sun s heat; how to make up for poor sunlight free of cost; how to automatically vent without power; how to choose the best glazing for your project; where to find free building materials; when to use heat tubes and when not to; how to use a root cellar in tandem with the greenhouse; where to use insulation with wonderful effect (and where to absolutely avoid it); how to deal with plant pests organically; what animals should be living in your greenhouse; and hundreds of more tips. The Earth- Sheltered Solar Greenhouse Book has 230 pages with nearly 200 illustrations, photos, diagrams, lists, charts and drawings. It contains all the information you need to free you from the pesticide, herbicide, fungicide, waxed, and E-coli laden, genetically modified and irradiated supermarket produce. Read more

  • Great coverage of the topic
Format: Paperback
Excellent instructions on the "why" of construction and site choice, in addition to the how-to. Good detail that appeals to the beginner as well as the more experienced person. Great for a guide to your first diy greenhouse, or an addition to other buildings.

  • Inspiring description of how to build an in ground greenhouse on the cheap.
Format: Paperback
I live in Wyoming where winters get very cold (-30 F). We have a super short growing system, so I have been looking into ways to extend the season. I think the ideas in this book are fantastic, but you need to be decently handy to implement them yourself. Although my husband and I are reasonably handy, we are still a little concerned with doing this completely ourselves because you don't want to build it wrong because you could have dirt collapse down on you, but if you hire someone to help, the price goes up exponentially. We haven't implemented it yet, but I am very interested in doing so. ... show more

  • Unique book with useful information
Format: Paperback
This is an intriguing book with great humor and an amazing concept of using passive heat from the earth to heat your greenhouse. Lots of mistakes you won’t have to make when working through the process because the author has already made them and details out problems and successes for you. Outdated information though and his building skills were below sub par. My husband is a framer and cringed at the way he did some things in his descriptions of building. However that said, if you are on a budget and looking to save money or do things cheaply or free...and if you are working with little to no experience building, this gives you the world at your fingertips so to speak. Step by step instructions and creative possibilities to work with. Worth the read for the concept and ingenuity. ... show more

  • Very detailed
Format: Paperback
This has been a favorite book for at least 10 years and when we lost the last one, it was easy to find in Amazon. This book has a lot of good info on underground building and how to utilize nature to make your green house completely self-sufficient.

  • Love this book!
Format: Paperback
Great book if you like thinking outside the box and experimenting. I couldn't put it down. It was easy to read helpful on what I'm trying to do and the author wasn't some know it all. He actually lived it and had failures and success and explains it to you like a normal person would. This book inspired me to finally take the plunge to trying it. Will not be disappointed. Favorite part was about the ducks in the book. ... show more

  • Good how-to, includes mistakes, easy to read, real life examples
Format: Paperback
I don't give out 5 stars very often. Mike's book is very, very good. He describes how his greenhouse plan developed, from small holes in the ground to the current result. Mike includes his mistakes, which I find extremely helpful. Mike covers related issues like pest access. I picked up a great deal of unrelated information that is valuable to me. Example: strawberry leaves contain vitamin C. The pictures and illustrations were excellent and there were plenty of them. Mike's writing is engaging. ... show more

  • Lotta work!
Format: Paperback
This book would be very helpful to a strong, able-bodied person who is willing to work pretty hard, not only finding (or buying and paying for) materials, but serious digging as well as doing the building. It probably would be a little easier if two people were working together on it. I, on the other hand, would have to pay someone else to do the work, which probably takes it all the way up to "too expensive" and even if it relies on solar heating and earth's constancy, I could never recover the cost if I grew my own vegetables for 40 years. If I were 35 years old instead of 75, however, I would enjoy the challenge of doing it myself, perhaps with the help of one of my children. The book makes sense, and his advice is excellent. ... show more
