The jSax follows traditional sax fingerings and is fully chromatic from middle C to G in the next octave. It has a surprising mellow sax sound and is fun to play. The sax is lightweight, portable and 100% waterproof making it very suitable for road trips and for the classroom. The jSax uses Nuvo synthetic reeds and can also use standard soprano saxophone reeds/E-flat clarinet reeds. It comes with a durable molded case.

If you read forum comments about this sax, there seems to be two kinds of reviews of this product: those who have never used it and say it's a toy, and those that have who love it. To some degree, the first people are somewhat correct in that you'll never use it for a concert. However that really misses the point. It's a portable, cheap, decent sounding instrument that dramatically lowers the bar for people pursuing music. And those peope that have used it, love it for those exact reasons We bought it for our sixth grader to keep at home so doesn't have to tote an instrument back and forth on the bus to school. As someone who did it for seven years, I know exactly how miserable that is. And it's been great for that. This is the most fun you can have for 88 dollars....and it’s the loudest fun you can have without amplification. Easy to hold- carry- play. Absolute joy. I was on the fence- I bought a Dood- I wish I had bought the jsax from the beginning. The Dood is fine- it just isn’t the jsax. I will say it might be a challenge for a larger person- I’m only 5’3 with small hands- so it’s fine for me- but larger people might be uncomfortable with the tiny size. You could easily throw this in a backpack- you could ride a bike with it and play in the park. Take it to the beach. Busk. Throw it in a go bag for the post apocalyptic world.... ... show more

Played sax as a kid 50 years ago, as I recall was pretty good. Rec'd the jsax a day before it was promised and in good condition. I got the jsax 2.0 but got a version without the o ring grease. I am guessing that Nuvo originally sent the jsax without the grease and now provide because it is needed. I will say that I emailed Nuvo's North American contact asking what grease I should use and got a response the same night well after office hours...very impressed. In any case, so far sound like a goose that is being tortured but have confidence I will get the hang of it with practice. I am happy that I can reintroduce myself to sax before spending hundreds of dollars on a new or used sax. Admittedly, this will take more practice than I thought so again am glad I didn't spend a ton of money until I know I am fully committed to purchase a real saxophone. ... show more

It's loud as it played the sound of jazz. Reed #1.5 was unable to play G5 (maybe due to a defect but N165MPGN fixed the problem) ; Reed #2 plays C4 to G5 okay

Wanted to go with something inexpensive bc my son doesn’t stick with stuff, and the cost to rent is way more, so was really hopeful for this. The look and feel is very nice and chic. My son really liked it, but his teacher didn’t think it would be the best way to learn, which I get. It says good for beginners, but teacher suggested learning on traditional sax first. ... show more

I was hoping to get a little better sound out of it but what can you expect out of molded plastic? I feel like it's a bit over-priced. I'm sure there are others that will really like it and can possibly get some really fantastic sound from it but it wasn't me.

Most importantly, it is easy to play for a young child who is just beginning. In my case, the child has special needs but was able to make a decent sound and play "Hot Cross Buns" within 6 minutes. For a young child, the size and weight are ideal. The ligature/mouthpiece design makes it easy for a beginner to change reeds. Equally important, it sounds like a sax. For the experienced player who wants to take a sax to the beach, or for camping, backpacking, or traveling, this could work pretty well. The jsax only plays 1 1/2 octaves (high g). This shouldn't be much of a limitation for beginners, because by the time they are able to hit notes above high g, they will probably be ready for an intermediate sax anyway. ... show more
