I am not a diabetic, but need to monitor blood sugar for a while. It was pure luck I found this QUALITY UNIT with all the junk out there being sold. This is MADE IN JAPAN--Japan made products are always of the highest quality. (I now have a new understanding and empathy for the discomfort diabetics go thru pricking their fingers all day for testing.) -The batteries were included. -The quick start guide was easy; simply take your time to read through it to set date/time, etc. -Once you slip the test strip in the unit, the unit automatically turns on. -The unit gives you the opportunity to identify if you are fasting, before meal, or after meal, or none, for each test. -As soon as you put the blood on the strip, then a little clock timer comes on the screen for a few seconds, then the reading shows up. -I can't really feel the prick with that little poker/lancet device. The person who invented that device should be given an award. It would be impossible to keep self-pricking fingers. -The unit will ask for more blood if needed--you have 30 seconds to add more--while the strip is in the unit -THE KEY WITH THE TEST STRIP IS: There is a tiny rectangular shaped gray area on the bottom of the test strip, and if you place the end of the test strip to touch your drop of blood, that little gray rectangle will pull in your blood like a magnet. So once your little drop of blood is on your skin, just move the end of the test strip into the drop, and you'll see that little gray section just pull in the blood like a magnet. -The larger User Guide is high quality, impressively structured and well written, and all of it is in English. One can perceive this is a professional unit, professionally designed, and this manufacturer just didn't mess around or compromise on quality. I give this unit 10 Stars! ... show more

I was excited to try this kit out based on the reviews. I am not diabetic, but I want to keep an eye on my blood sugar, because at times it has been borderline prediabetic. Having never tested at home before, I read all of the directions carefully more than once. I followed the directions to the letter. Update: My initial review was negative (I've deleted most of it), because it seemed the results were inconsistent. Part of my problem was my inexperience in checking my glucose at home. Now that I've gotten better at using the Contour Next and have tried other similar products, I realize how wonderfully easy this device is to use and that you CAN get accurate results. Both the meter and the lancing device are simpler to use than the other (more expensive one) that I tried. I've had no trouble getting enough blood to get a reading with the Contour Next (Okay, I do have it set on 5. I'm not thin-skinned!). I like that I can specify Fasting and Before and After a Meal on the meter. I'd like to add that the set-up on this meter was much, much easier than the other I tried. Was curious about my blood glucose so I bought this. Easy to use, relatively painless fingersticks, and really like the second-chance feature (where if your fingerstick doesn't provide enough blood you have about 60 seconds to give a little more blood). Has everything you need in a handy kit.

Great product, works fast as well. Reasonably priced too. The only thing I don't like is after you provide blood then it asks if blood is based on fasting, before or after meal. I wish it would ask first before checking the blood

The meter is easy to use, and the supplies are affordable too. This is my first meter, and I'm happy I chose this one as it's very simple.
