This is a pretty bare-bones set as far as packaging goes with each disc coming in a pretty basic sleeve emulating the original album artwork, and then a short booklet with some photos and individual album credits all housed in a small box that is not particularly sturdy but... sturdy enough. But it's the music that matters and it's all here: every song from every studio album the band did during their original run of 1974-1983. Also included is the 30th Anniversary two-disc version of their 1978 live album "Two For The Show" that provides nearly 2.5 hrs of classic Kansas recorded during their peak years of 1977-78. The first five albums all include bonus tracks that are mostly live cuts recorded from 1975-78 (all different performances than those on "Two For The Show"). More casual fans could probably survive with the 5-disc "Classic Albums Collection" that includes just their first 5 albums and then augment that with the compilation of choice to get the radio hits from subsequent albums, but more dedicated fans will want this set for the remasters of "Monolith" (1979) and "Audio-Visions" (1980), both of which are not available elsewhere that I am aware of, and the excellent expanded version of "Two For The Show" in order to experience the "live" Kansas. "Monolith" is the first album not included in the 5cd set. It didn't have the monster hit like "Carry On Wayward Son" or "Dust in the Wind" to propel it to multi-platinum status like "Leftoverture" and "Point of Know Return", but it's a solid 4 or even 5-star album that should not be slept on by anyone who appreciates their earlier work. The remaster here is a noticeable improvement over the original CD release bringing its sound to more on par with other earlier remastered titles. The 1980 release "Audio-Visions" was more hit and miss for me but at least half of it is great and the other half is at least ok. Like "Monolith", the version here is remastered and brings a noticeable improvement to the original CD release. This album brought an end to the classic Kansas lineup as Steve Walsh would depart and be replaced by John Elefante for the 1982 release of "Vinyl Confessions". That would spawn one of their biggest hits with "Play The Game Tonight" and justifiably so; it is truly essential Kansas even without Steve Walsh there to sing it. But other than 1 or 2 other songs, much of the rest of this album falls short of its predecessors and other than "Play The Game Tonight" is mostly skippable. It's the first Kansas album that I don't listen to in its entirety very often at all. The last album of this set is 1983's "Drastic Measures" that also included a big MTV hit ("Fight Fire With Fire") which is a different sounding Kansas but still very good. Unfortunately, the rest of the album falls flat as Kerry Livgren was fading into the background with one foot out the door (he would depart the band altogether after this album). As a result, most of the songwriting duties fell to new singer John Elefante and his brother Dino and it just wasn't the same. Key member Robby Steinhardt (violin) had also departed prior to recording this album, making this another skippable album other than the MTV hit. But even with two (mostly) dud albums, the set still provides 7 outstanding Kansas studio albums and the expanded version of their double live album, all in remastered sound and many with worthwhile bonus tracks. I paid $80 for my set and don't regret it a bit. While I won't say one can and should dismiss anything the band did after 1983, I will say that if all you had was this set, you would have all you really needed to experience Kansas and what established them as one of the great bands of the 70's with enough staying power to still be touring and drawing crowds 50 years later. Nearly everything they play in concert today comes from these albums, so check 'em out!

Well, let me just say that I have to disagree with bob twain. I think this is a great box and I am glad I bought it. Here's why: first off, it's a great buy at $50. You're getting 11 cd's for that price, so that's less than $5 a disc, and these are not old first generation 90's cd's that they usually package up in a 3-pak to sell at a bargain price, these are the newest Kansas remasters that not only sound great, but include bonus tracks on the first five albums AND they include the 2-disc expanded 30th anniversary edition of the Two For The Show "Live" album. And, to top it all off, the Monolith cd is remastered here for the first time! The old product description was pretty good, but it seems to have been revised and gives you less info now. Here is what you get: 10 Classic Kansas albums from the debut in 1974 to Drastic Measures from 1983 all in mini-LP replica form of the original Kirshner Records releases. A 22 page booklet which includes a song listing for each album along with standard liner notes of band members, crew, album dedications, production information, and of course band photos. Now I will admit that the booklet is slightly on the cheap side because it is black & white only. Oh, and to address that criticism of the white border on all the replica album jackets, well guess what, it makes reading the title on the edge of each album much easier. They also made the Monolith replica a "gate-fold" just like the original album. I really couldn't care less that they have a white border vs. the album art going from edge to edge. I just think it would make reading the album titles harder. I will admit that I do not own any of those Japanese SHM releases in mini-LP replica form. The reason is...I only care about the Music. Packaging can be nice, but come on, it's the music that matters and this is a nice collection of music for someone who does not own all of these classic Kansas discs. I consider myself a pretty big fan, but even I did not have Vinyl Confessions or Drastic Measures. In my opinion, if someone really thinks that this set should be given a 1-star rating because of the packaging alone, then they are just a snobby perfectionist and not a music fan.

I finally purchased this box set after considering it for a long time. I have many of the Kansas Albums on Vinyl. I must say that the remastering is excellent. Many remasters subject the listener to way to much sub bass...although this can be equalized out ...it still tends to muddy up the Bass guitar and bring the Bass Drum forward...that being said... these cds sound great. For the price...very cool. The box for this set is not great...the packaging is better than Jewel cases and the booklet basic. I do see at least 3 diff individuals involved in the re mastering of the cds. Overall a great purchase for any Kansas or prog rock fan.

Great box of Kansas CDs with great remastered sound in nice tidy album replica sleeves. Their later albums after Steve Walsh left are iffy hit and miss. But the early records are phenomenal classic Midwest progressive rock. Just for fun here is my rank and rating individually. I kept telling myself for the longest time that I was going to buy all my vinyl Kansas on CD when I won the lottery. Imagine how excited I became when I found this particular 11 CD set for such a low price. My heart was racing the entire time I was ordering. I expected shipment in 7-15 days. I'd waited THIS long, so no big deal, right? My parcel arrived 2 days later. The box that it arrived in was a little smooshed on one side. Eh, okay. Every individual CD inside was unharmed! I was hooked on Kansas @ 12 years old. I stopped collecting and listening to any vinyl right after Drastic Measures. You know, work, school, being a productive citizen. All of that nonsense that can subtly take the joy away from you in 1-4 short decades. I still have all my vinyl Kansas, but no turntable. Funny, some things I just cannot part with. Immediately, I fired up my dream system (yeah, that's right) and it works perfectly, put in the first 4 CDs and hit PLAY. I don't care if the packaging is cardboard. I don't care if there are no lyrics included. After all these years, I began to sing along with the music. My old woman brain remembered every last keyboard, violin and guitar note played, every change in drum beat and every word sang in the music of my youth. I think I may have wept a little. Thank You Amazon for such speedy service. It's been a great day!

I love having the full early Kansas catalog in one place. I'm able to go back and listen to the deeper tracks that I had left behind when I transitioned away from vinyl and listening to the albums in the original running order takes me back to when I first marveled at the band's creativity. Now that they'e in the "Mark III" era for the band, I'd love to see the albums from Power to Somewhere to Elsewhere be put in a similar collection to help pull together the later releases. All of these albums have great material, even though some are obviously stronger than others. I'm certainly grateful to have all of the Kerry Livgren-era releases nicely packaged.

Vinyl Confessions ..... Got the oversea copy shipped quick, and the price was right. The Good; Monolith, Audio Visions, by far the best work that had not been remastered. The Bad; CD label does not match vinyl artwork, which is part of the record. Also the sleeve artwork and lyrics are missing. Other than that this is a complete must have KANSAS, just add "Somewhere to Elsewhere" "Always Never the Same" and "In the Spirit of Things" and you pretty much have Everything KANSAS. For a Band that the artwork is remembered as much as the music I can understand the complains about the packaging. But as the Song goes... The MUSIC is All for you (not the packaging) It's really all we got to Share
