The imagination and talent of J. K. Rowling appears to be as endless as outer space! And I love her writing for exactly those trips into whimsy she takes us on! I am and have been a full grown adult for many years and I loved Jack and his journey in this book better than I would have as a child since I couldn't have recognized the majority of the Lost Things Jack saw or met. Perhaps there should have also been a character called Irony for adults like me, but it was likely there in the shadows all along. What a beautifully done story this was with so many loving messages along the way! I could not stop reading! Highly recommended, especially for us cynical baby boomers who might need a reminder of the simpler times of childhood imagination. J.K. Rowling brought me to the story, the story and message kept me reading. I have read the first two Harry Potter books with my 6 and 4 year old, and we decided to take a little break from HP and read the Christmas Pig since it just came out and it was the Holiday Season. I will say, the first few chapters were a little intense for my 6 and 4 year old, and I did, throughout the story, make a few minor adjustments to word selection to make it a tad more appropriate for the vocabulary I want my children using. However, once we got passed those first few chapters, the story blossomed in to a journey through our emotions. My four year old was brought to tears in a few parts of the story both from sadness and happiness. They both had questions and theories about what was going to happen. They were engaged the entire book and always wanted me to keep reading. I can understand and see some of the points others have made in low review scores, but I'm so glad I read on after the first few chapters. I would rather those topics come up while my wife and I are reading a story to them so they can ask questions in a safe environment rather than learn it elsewhere. Each of those "bad" moments in the story can be turned in to a great learning moment where you can explain to them why someone did what they did and how they could have possibly responded differently. I would suggest to keep reading if your on these sites trying to decide what to do. However, you know your kids best and what they can and can't handle. ... show more

Absolutely a precious book. Trigger warning — it involves a lot of really hard things that children will sometimes go thru in life. So if your child is experiencing these things (divorce, moving, big life changes) you may want to approach with ease but I think it’s a great lesson to other children that haven’t had to endure those things to be more gentle for children that HAVE. Not as original as her previous work. Many themes seem pulled from other popular kids stories. That said, still a fun story and quite the page turner. My 5 year old was engaged and enjoyed it thoroughly. I wasn’t sure what to expect trying to read such a long book to a young child. But, We read a few chapters every night and got through it quicker than I expected! She was definitely engaged, liked the story, and really wanted to see what would happen to Jack! Not sure why Rowling had to include a divorce early in the story though. That is a big topic for a book that might be read to small children. I would have preferred to not have to get into that. As an American English speaker it was fun discussing some of the British English used in this book. ... show more

I will admit I was a bit hesitant to buy and read 'The Christmas Pig' because I am an avid Harry Potter fan and found it hard to believe I could enjoy a book by J.K. Rowling that didn't involve witches, wizards, and wands. I decided to give C.P. a try, though, and I'm so glad I did! It is an engrossing, enchanting, and meaningful story that I will now make part of my Christmas tradition every year. Also, I feel pretty safe in saying that C.P. is appropriate for younger children. There IS a scary bad-guy, but every story needs one of those. I don't think there's anything in C.P. that younger kids would find overly traumatic. (As much as I love the Potter books--I've read the series about twenty times!---there are certain scenes in some of those books that are just too upsetting for young children to be exposed to.) On the other end of the scale, I think that even though Christmas Pig is definitely a children's book, many adults will enjoy it as well. After all, I enjoyed it, and I'm 69 years old. ;-) ... show more

    • A wonderful story

This book was perfect to read with my 8 yr old. It’s so imaginative and takes you away into another world, while you can still relate it to real life and human emotion. Life can be so hard but there is so much good to be found in it. Any child or grown up could enjoy this book, although the content was beyond what my four year old could comprehend. As an adult that loved books as a child, it was so special to read this with my daughter. 10/10 this book was excellent! ... show more
