Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From the pages of Vogue to the runways of Paris, this “captivating” (Time) memoir by a legendary style icon captures the fashion world from the inside out, in its most glamorous and most cutthroat moments. “The Chiffon Trenches honestly and candidly captures fifty sublime years of fashion.”—Manolo Blahnik NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR Fortune Garden & Gun New York Post During André Leon Talley’s first magazine job, alongside Andy Warhol at Interview, a fateful meeting with Karl Lagerfeld began a decades-long friendship with the enigmatic, often caustic designer. Propelled into the upper echelons by his knowledge and adoration of fashion, André moved to Paris as bureau chief of John Fairchild’s Women’s Wear Daily, befriending fashion's most important designers (Halston, Yves Saint Laurent, Oscar de la Renta). But as André made friends, he also made enemies. A racially tinged encounter with a member of the house of Yves Saint Laurent sent him back to New York and into the offices of Vogue under Grace Mirabella. There, he eventually became creative director, developing an unlikely but intimate friendship with Anna Wintour. As she rose to the top of Vogue’s masthead, André also ascended, and soon became the most influential man in fashion. The Chiffon Trenches offers a candid look at the who’s who of the last fifty years of fashion. At once ruthless and empathetic, this engaging memoir tells with raw honesty the story of how André not only survived the brutal style landscape but thrived—despite racism, illicit rumors, and all the other challenges of this notoriously cutthroat industry—to become one of the most renowned voices and faces in fashion. Woven throughout the book are also André’s own personal struggles that impacted him over the decades, along with intimate stories of those he turned to for inspiration (Diana Vreeland, Diane von Fürstenberg, Lee Radziwill, to name a few), and of course his Southern roots and faith, which guided him since childhood. The result is a highly compelling read that captures the essence of a world few of us will ever have real access to, but one that we all want to know oh so much more about. Read more

  • This is an incredibly wonderful book!!!
I have always been captivated by fashion, love the magazines, love the fashion shows, love fashion!!! I have subscribed to nearly every fashion magazine you could think of and have been mesmerized by Ms. Wintour and her eclectic collection of the very best minds in fashion, but I had no idea that many of the best in fashion had actually found her. Mr. Andre Leon Talley is an amazing individual, who was not only born with the ever-elusive genetic gene for impeccable fashion, but for taste as well. I never realized he was not only a fashion giant, but such an intelligent and sensitive individual as well. Imagine a small child growing up in the Jim Crow south, moving on in life to attain a scholarship to Brown University, securing a graduate degree in French Literature and then going to New York to land an internship under the iconic Diana Vreeland! I thought that only happened in movies, but being who he is, both artistically and intellectually, how could it not have happened? It was his destiny. He takes us on this journey with him and tells us everything, describes all the wonderful places he has been, all the interesting people he has known and even describes the luscious fashion he experiences along the way, all in glorious detail. I can see everything in my mind’s eye. He leaves nothing out, and no one out, which is the foundation of an exceptional read. I went to bed every night with this wonderful book and sometimes read until my eyes hurt, but also tried to make it last. I was sad when it was over, because I wanted it to go on. I recommend this book to everyone who loves everything beautiful. The delightful Mr. Talley puts it all out there, thorns and all, for us to enjoy and it is wondrous!! ... show more

  • Awesome read, fall into the world of Andre Leon Talley
I loved his words, I loved his introduction to the designers and celebrities we wouldn’t have otherwise known. His celebration of his favorite people, the way he detailed his friendships their ascent and descent into almost fading away. I love what Andre has done to give us a glimpse into his real world. His revealing of long it took to be able to finally tell his truth was remarkable. Great read! ... show more

  • This book made me wish I knew fashion!
What a lovely book! A friend of mine dismissed it as “an overdose of name dropping”, but I didn’t feel that at all. I loved discovering the personalities of so many designers. While this book is an autobiography, I read it more as an expose on the design community. There seem to be extremes of kindness and generosity juxtaposed against incredibly cruel behavior toward those these couture designers called friends. It reminds one that often great talent belongs to individuals of very fragile egos. I was delighted by ALT’s life and his description of it. Though I was also sad that he - and others - felt so betrayed and abandoned by Vogue. I wouldn’t deal well with that at all. At the heart of kindness is gratitude for what we have, I believe. And it seems that these talented and influential people are so unsure of what they have they spend all their time seeking more and are never able to appreciate their accomplishments. At first it seemed such a joyful book, but it descends into a diatribe against individuals who ceased to show kindness or appreciation to ALT. I felt sad that a man of such immense talent was just abandoned, but I also thought he seemed happier enjoying doing good in the community - church, fashion, charity - than he seemed for much of the book. ... show more

  • A fun read, with a surprisingly relatable narrator
The author spills the tea and opens the door to the world of fashion, revealing the beauty and the dirty underbelly of the beast. What makes the book compelling, however, is the humanity of its narrator and subject. Talley possesses knowledge and passion, as well as a soul searching for the beauty and love in all around him. As written here, he seems to own a purity of eye and heart that is lacking in Lagerfeld and Wintour, who obviously thrive on power, control, and manipulation. Seems likely that this is what led to the demise of these relationships, as these two probably realized they did not compare favorably. Certainly Wintour has driven Vogue straight into the toilet - no beauty or value to be had. He doesn’t seem to see it, but I suspect he was a threat to her - imagine Vogue under his leadership, a feast for the senses. His writing is wonderful, and he is open and vulnerable about his struggles. Yeah he’s a bit of a diva, but I wanted to give him a hug. The last line is an arrow straight to the heart and speaks to the humanity in us all. ... show more

  • So Much Privilege, and Then, Kaput
Many people know I was a full-on fashion person in my last life (and still am for some clients). @andreltalley and I have worked at the same publication, have been social with the same people at the same events, even were represented by the same agent for a time and even went to the same MD, yet I do not know him at all. I have seen him and his actions and heard stories, but I really know very little about him. This book is necessary. The timing is prescient with pandemic lockdown and #BlackLivesMatter protests (his publisher pushed up the pub date). His telling of his sometimes awful experiences because of the color of his skin is remarkable. These stories need to be told by him because his experiences in the inner circle are so unique. And in some cases, so ghastly. Sure, I loved reading about being besties with #karllagerfeld and #annawintour , but my interest was more in #alt personally -- where he comes from, where his talent and drive come from and what he experienced along the way. He was mistreated at so many turns by so many callous people. It makes me sad for him, as it seems he starts out a bit of a damaged person. I'm also very happy about some of the good and kind people he's found along the way. It's a super engaging memoir, even if you don't know who all of the fashion people he's talking about are. ... show more
