  • Very entertaining
Format: Kindle
Spoiler alert - - This book has a cliff hanger ending, for which the authors apologize in the afterword. Who cares. This is a terrific and fun Pendergast novel featuring his ward, Constance Greene, and most of the usual cast of characters. It is not a mystery story so much as a sci-fi/thriller incorporating time travel. I have always thought Constance was the most interesting of all the supporting characters in this series. While Bloodless, the preceding novel, gave us some insight into her mysterious background, this book tells her whole story and it's a good one. She remains the most interesting of the supporting cast. Dr. Leng is a well drawn truly evil villain. He has a mind equal to or better than Pendergast and is able to manipulate all the players to unwittingly do or fall victim to his will. To tell too much more of the story would spoil the fun for those who have not yet read the book. The Cabinet of Curiosities has always been my favorite of the Pendergast books and I didn't realize is the first in the Dr. Leng series. This book is the third of four in the Dr. Leng series with Bloodless being the second. The authors promise a quick release of the fourth and final book which I am anxiously awaiting. In the meantime I will reread the other two. There have been some highs and lows in the 21 Pendergast novels. The three in the Dr. Leng series have been the best, in my opinion, and I highly recommend reading them if you have not already. ... show more

  • Wow!
Format: Kindle
I am a big fan of your Prendergast novels... I have read all of them so far... And most of your equally excellent books. I had a hard time putting the book down. As authors you and Lincoln Child never disappoint! From the first page to the last I was transported to a world of your imaginations. Thank you Douglas and Lincoln for your wonderful stories! Now I have to sit down and catch my breath as I wait for your next book. My favorite lines in the book was when Proctor was describing what would happen to Ferenc if he didn't fulfill his obligations or told anyone about "The Time Machine". "“You know,” Proctor said at last, “they did a study in England a few years ago. On cats. Not the wild kind, but the domesticated ones: house cats who know where their next meal is coming from. They discovered that when hunting prey—mice, birds, rabbits—80 percent of the time, the cats intentionally gave their victims a brief warning before they sprang. And when later these same cats played with the captured mice, one time in ten the victim got away as a result. Why would cats do this, they asked—taliterae on losing their prey after a long, slow stalk? Tease them instead of killing them outright? The answer they arrived at was simple: the house cats were bored. Seeing fear in your victim’s eyes, it turns out, is an excellent way to relieve monotony. So—do you really want to leave, Dr. Ferenc? Because, to be honest, part of me is hoping you’ll do just that. You see, it’s not only cats that experience monotony from time to time.” I received such delicious chills as read ad reread these words! In conclusion your literary talents are so appreciated, they have kept me from boredom especially after the pandemic... Then... You have me lustfully waiting for the conclusion... Argh! Thank you and please, please hurry up in getting the conclusion of this wonderful tale to me. Ted Hussey ... show more

  • Another Great Story in the Pendergast Series
Format: Kindle
Another good entry in the Pendergast series, now up to 21 books. I really liked the sprawling overall story that includes nearly all of the main surviving members of the Pendergast world. There are two investigations presented, with the Vince D'Agosta character as the link. One of the two cases is a law enforcement procedural, and the other is a fantastic adventure in time and space. Both stories are presented in a lot of detail. Generally, I liked the detail and all of the character presentations. Very much like the majority of the Pendergast stories. SPOILERS: The book is not a complete stand alone. It ends with massive cliffhangers. I don't view this as negative. I think almost all readers of Pendergast #21 would back for Pendergast #22 in any case. I think most long-time Pendergast readers would acknowledge the need for considerable suspensions of disbelief for nearly all the books in the series, especially for the character of A.X.L. Pendergast himself. I'm generally OK with this need. But the time travel aspects of the last story and this one are hard for me to accept. I can enjoy some TT stories that focus on adventure, and don't take the TT science too seriously. I know that a lot of recent books and movies use the "multiple parallel universes" idea to justify forms of time travel, but that doesn't make it easier to swallow for me. Otherwise, I really enjoyed this book. ... show more

Such a riveting and spellbinding story. The imagination of the author makes this so entertaining and leaves the reader eagerly anticipating each new event. I sometimes found myself almost holding my breath.

  • Time travel mystery thriller
This is the twenty first book in this very long series, but this book still feels completely original. It focuses on Constance as she is trying to save her siblings from the terrible dr Leng, 150 years in the past. Agent Pendergast and Lt DAgosta is trying to find a way to get to her, but will she even need or want their help? This book is very good, and the characters are evolv8ng very much when faced with this impossible situation. Love this series so much. ... show more

  • Marvelous, despite the annoying continuance ~
Format: Kindle
WARNING🚨WARNING SPOILERS🚨 ~ I was there at the beginning with The Relic (god, I’m old) and while I’ve not plowed my way through all 22 of the P books, I’ve definitely kept my hand in. I didn’t have as much trouble with the whole time machine travel as I thought I would, but holy cow where did Big Bad come from? Last I heard he’d been dumped in a volcano, for heaven’s sakes. When he snaked out ~ as he’s wont to do ~ my first thought was, is there a billboard up there in 1880 saying, “Come to the Coast, we’ll get together, have a few laughs …” 2 points if you catch the movie reference. Seems like everyone’s showing up there!!! My hearts goes out to Constance that she lost Mary …. but I’m wondering about that? We are dealing with Leng, after all. Perhaps wishful thinking on my part. I found the side story with Vinne/Coldmoon very interesting; it’s always a plus when I learn something and I absolutely did there, but I’m not getting it? Does this tie in? Was it just to give us a chance to catch our collective breaths? I remain unsure. The second half comes out in August and I’ve notated it on my calendar. I know it’ll be awesome. I have complete faith! ... show more

  • A sprawling complex plot
Format: Kindle
There are a lot of moving parts to the plotlines in this Pendergast outing. Until they begin to slot in place it’s a bit of a haul getting there. I’m a diehard Pendergast fan so I was content to go along for the ride. Middle books can be difficult to pull off and--Cabinet of Curiosities aside--this is a middle book in a mini-series within the bigger series. It ends on a cliff-hanger, but it’s not the first time P&C have done that. Given there is a LOT of story to tell, I respect their need to continue matters in yet another novel (the authors even apologize in the Afterward for not wrapping things up). I thoroughly enjoyed the scenes set during New York’s Gilded Age. Constance, who I’ve really come to enjoy in the latter half of the series, gets a great opportunity to shine. She is such an amazingly complex character—almost as complex as Pendergast. There are really two separate stories going on in this book, one which involves Pendergast’s former partner, Coldmoon. That plotline slows things down a bit, but I imagine it will explode in typical P&C edge-of-your-seat fashion in the next novel. And it was fun to see Coldmoon working with Vinnie D’Agosta. It’s also great to have Vinnie back again. On the downside, there is so much Coldmoon and Constance (separate story lines) that Pendergast has little to do during the first half of the novel. A reminder to my beloved favorite authors that the reason I read Pendergast is for Pendergast. He is more involved in the second half of the novel, and I sincerely hope he’ll be center stage in the book to follow this one. As for the ending, I’m torn. Superb, unexpected twist, but on the other hand… I fear what the authors have planned. I guess the next book will reveal all. I’m ready to pre-order now! ... show more
