Description

Step back in time to the tiny farm community of Osage Bend, Missouri, circa 1930-1945…Part memoir, part how-to manual, The Bumpy Road paints a vivid picture of life on the farm during the Great Depression. The author, recounting stories from his boyhood, brings to life the everyday trials and tribulations of his family and neighbors as they struggle to survive under daunting economic conditions. The hard work they put in was a given (to them), and their solutions to everyday problems were ingenious by necessity. And yet, they still found time to socialize and make the church the center of their lives. These tenacious people always looked to the future with hope and determination, and that comes shining through in this book. Depression-era, yes, depressing, no!So, discover the many facets of running a farm, how chores were done, the importance of family, and the many things that tied the community together. Marvel at the strength and resourcefulness of these rural Missourians—and take some of that for yourself as we endure our own difficult times today.Bonus: Includes photos and illustrations of farm tools, implements, and household items from the era, many of which you can now only find in museums. • Interesting
What a great book! Husband can’t put it down, AND it’s large print!

  • Old times
I'm old enough to remember many of the things told about in this book. It was a hard life, lots of work. People on farms fared much better than most during the depression.

  • Such a heartwarming read!
This is a recently revived story of a good man’s life from the 1930’s up to the turn of the century. It was so beautifully done and told with an authentic charm that just brought me “back home”. The author/editor takes me back to so many memories from my earliest childhood. What resonated with me was the simplicity in the description of a complex life in difficult times. And the book reaffirms one’s faith in the American spirit. Enjoy this gem and take a rare honest peek into the generation that made this country so remarkable. ... show more

  • An Excellent Step Back Into Depression Era History
My Mom was born in 1927 and grew up on a farm in Ohio. We just celebrated her 94th birthday. I told her about this book and think she will get a kick out of it. She is looking forward to reading it. She always told me that people living on farms during the Depression were always too busy living life to worry about how little money they had. They were actually quite wealthy in other ways, which this book explains very well. It was definitely a time when families were close and looked out for one another. Electricity wasn't available for most until almost the start of WW2. So no radio or TV to interfere with their lives. People had to talk to each other to find out was going on and to entertain themselves. Something we as a nation are sorely missing today. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and even got a few laughs out of it (e.g., I liked the idea about using the wringer on the washing machine to "pop" peas out of their pods. It worked so well they had to hang sheets up to catch the peas, otherwise they would shoot across the room.) I have recommended this book to several others and highly recommend it to all who like stories about farming and families in the early 20th century. ... show more

  • Pleasant Read
If you want to know about how people farmed during the Great Depression, the first half of the book is for you. The second part tells you more about what life was like in one community during the Great Depression. The book was a pleasant read. However, unless you are a farmer and are just a regular person looking for information on what you can learn to help you survive if there is another Great Depression, the book doesn’t offer much. As I said it was a pleasant read so I gave it a 5, but it wasn’t want I was really looking for. ... show more

  • Not Great
The topic of farming life interests me throughout the years of this country. However, this book did not have a lot of substance and was quite boring. My major issue was the treatment of animals and the joy surrounding the beating of the horse to the experiments on the rabbits. I understand the slaughter aspects from the view point of survival on the farm however the memories strike me as somewhat of - a fun time was had by all - especially the rabbit experiments. Was there nothing else of interest for this author to remember. I found the book to be a morbid rendition of the farm life instead of the healthy beauty of survival. Dee ... show more

  • A great view of older times
My dad grew up on a farm in the Great Depression. Quentin F. Veit describes farm implements and farming processes that we can't imagine in our day and age. Back then those were the things people did to survive and bring a new respect for the work they did in the day.
