    • Short, But Worthwhile
Format: Paperback
This is a shorter book than I expected, with much less detail than I'd hoped for from a book billing itself as an "almanac". Those who want immediately-actionable knowledge that will help them analyze the profitability of a miner project, design the layout of their facility, or select hardware and mining pools will have to look elsewhere. If there are any tables or charts in the book, I've forgotten them already a couple of days after finishing it. That said, this is probably the only real book about Bitcoin mining, and certainly the most current. I would still recommend it to anyone interested in mining, and I managed to learn something despite already being involved in "pleb" mining at a very small scale. The first half gives a broad overview of what Bitcoin mining looks like at different scales, from the home miner keeping their family warm in the winter while earning a few sats to massive public companies using hundreds of megawatts of electricity. I found this part the most valuable, since I knew very little about mining at large scale—especially the more exotic water-cooled and immersion approaches. The second half has interviews with several people in the mining "industry", with each of the scales discussed in the book represented. This was less useful to me, since you can find this kind of material on the many Bitcoin-related podcasts, but it's still nice to have a written record and the stories were interesting. ... show more

I learned so much about the different ways people mine Bitcoin and how it interacts with electric grids. Appreciated the nuanced analogies and the detailed framing of examples. I was a little worried this would go over my head but did not find it to be too technical once I started.

What a great book and necessary addition to the growing field of bitcoin! Not too technical - it explains that a mining machine has three inputs, and four basic parts, in words that anyone can understand. The best part is the layout of the book. FIrst half is the basics of, and different (small, medium and large) types of bitcoin operations, from a single machine in the basement to a gigantic facility hundreds of acres. Importantly, it demonstrates that there are so many motivations and factors going into consideration for mining, that all sizes and speeds of operation can be profitable. The second half is just as excellent. It is a series of interviews with mining operators, from families to small companies to publicly held firms. Some have bitcoin mining as only one part of their company, one operates exclusively in Africa, and shows the risks of larger operations as well as smaller ones. I've been seriously orange pilled and have read more than ten books on the subject, and this one added an entirely new dimension to my knowledge. ... show more
