PRECISE Engineering (+-m 5%) of belt and slide prevents the belt from tightening and squeezing your companion when he pulls on the leash while walking and flying. The strap material used to make the Aviator Harness is carefully chosen for a combination of strength and comfort. Welded, not sewn. Many parrots find the stitches attractive and become obsessed with removing them. The Aviator Design eliminates as many distractions as possible. All material is cut and assembled with the Ultrasonic welding process we developed. You will notice there are NO rough edges that can damage a bird's thin skin. Beware of Knockoffs. Imitation is the highest form of flattery and we are very flattered. Most knockoffs are made in China. Approximately half of our production time involves quality control to eliminate all sharp edges that can scratch skin, and very close material tolerance so the belt will not tighten and strangle your bird if it flies. Read more Quality Design and Workmanship The Aviator Harness is made from high-quality nylon strap material and steel parts. Our challenge is to use materials that are strong and damage resistant, but not so heavy or stiff to be dangerous for a bird to wear safely. This topic is covered in more detail in the package and on the video. For 20 years we and hundreds of thousands of other bird owners have tried every safe material we could find. We have even tried every knock of our design and have not found anything better. Suitable materials must be able to be made into a safe harness. Heavy material makes it dangerous to wear and during flight. Some owners use the Aviator every day and when bored some birds do tend to chew on the harness. Eventually a harness can become damaged and may need to be replaced. You can see hundreds of customer’s videos on YouTube showing many techniques to improve your birds’ behavior when wearing The Aviator Harness. Read more Training is Necessary Most parrots are accidentally taught to chew on everything. All their toys and entertainment items are made from materials that are similar to everything else in our homes. The fear of reprimanding and being accused of ‘Negative Reinforcement’ causes even the best parrot parents to fall short of managing this behavior. When it is acceptable to put a bird into a steel cage to control damage, the need to follow through is often lost. Just like we train our dogs, we need to train our birds what is not appropriate to chew on. Everyone is successful at teaching our birds no to chew our clothes, so we know it is possible if we have the right attitude. Work on teaching your bird what it is and is not allowed to chew on This knowledge will extend to the rest of your house. You will be one step closer to maintaining a lifelong friend. Read more

  • Happy but will be needing another. Happy but will be needing another.
I waited a few weeks to write the review to really test it out. So I bought this for my 3 month old double yellow headed Amazon thinking I would try it out after trying out 2 other types of harnesses on my other birds. I thought If nothing else I would use it to get him used to wearing it while he was young and if he chewed it up while learning that would be okay, because I would buy another when he is full grown. The one I ordered had said it was right size for yellow naped Amazon, so I figured it would fit him for a few more months since double yellow heads are a bit bigger...Boy was I wrong. In just the 2 weeks from the time I received it his head has already grown too big to fit. This is by no means the sellers fault in this, but my own. In the past I had ordered different types of harness for my cockatiels and although I liked the other kind of harnesses the each lacked the durability that I wanted for a larger bird. As for the fact this one is all one piece when others I had were harder to put on. This one is durable at least the harness itself. It is a very thick material and I feel like it would take a long time for him to chew it up if he ever wanted to, although I plan to teach him not to and so far he hasn’t tried to chew. The leash part think could be a little thicker. It’s thick enough and I would trust it for one of my smaller birds but for one like him I wouldn’t trust it not to last through a good chewing session. At the same time I don’t plan to have him in it without constant supervision to let there be a chew session, and I always have back up such as a bird carrier backpack. I also know I wouldn’t leave him unattended long enough to chew. I also love that there’s not all these complicated parts that make it take even longer to get it on as others I have tried out. And for a bird who still isn’t full grown I felt like this was much safer then others in being against the crop. It doesn’t pull in the chest area which I appreciate. We did have a blast the first time I got him in it and was able to take him for a walk around the yard to check the mail and it was nice to finally get him out without being in a carrier. He had fun talking to neighbors passing by, charming them with yelling out “hello” to them and he had me laughing with babbling away excitedly whenever he saw something new. I can’t wait to take him out again. He wasn’t too happy when I first put it on him even if we had been getting him used to touching his wings and being wrapped up with a towel. He did enjoy being out and now he doesn’t mind us draping it onto him while formula feeding, since his head doesn’t fit that’s all we can do with it now. I will be buying a larger one soon. This is great to have if you have the time to spend to get your bird to wear it, and it is probably the best made easiest one to put on of those I have tried. ... show more

  • A great product but you need to move up a size for a Goffin
I found the CD to be very helpful, with it and some time I feel this will work great. However with my goffin the head area is very tight to get on. I was able to get this on my bird but it was hard and getting it off was a fight. I am unable to see if the body of the harness fits at this time since the little dear will not work with me. It will take time and patience but I can see this working out wonderful for us both. I feel this is a wonderful product which will get my bird back outside where she loves to be. She enjoys the outside and long walks which she has not had since she flew away a few weeks ago. I am new to the bird world and will have to work on some major training since I have taken her in from an owner that didn’t have time and she spent most of her time in a cage. Update: The size I bought which was small will not work with my Goffin. Over the head is just way to tight. It might work if I went up a size which I may contact the seller for a change out. The major issue I have is with how tight the head area is. It is too soon to know if I need to go up a size since I am unable to get this harness on her all the way. I will have to do an update at that time. I am going to give this a 5 star for the CD which was wonderful and I feel this is a great product which will work great, along with the exchange policy if it does not fit. With the CD and the return policy if you have time and patience to work with your bird I feel this is well worth the money. I feel the seller is very helpful and really wants what is best for the bird. That they are more interested in keeping your bird safe along with enjoying the time outside than selling their product. Do not get me wrong I am sure they want to sell and make lots of money I just feel they are more for what is best for your bird and getting the correct fit which makes them a top seller in my book. Look for an update when the sweetie lets me get the harness on her. ... show more

  • Join needs to be reinforced
First off, I have used this harness for years and will continue to do so. However I think it’s important to know that the join between the shock cord and nylon webbing is not able to withstand the forces necessary, particularly if you fly large birds on a regular basis. My big Greenwing flies in this harness everyday. Something gave her a startle flight and she broke the join. She flew up into a neighbors tree and then flew back down to us so she wasn’t hurt, but we have big eagles here and the cord could have gotten tangled in the tree. My sibling is an engineer and I asked them to help me reinforce the join. They said they would expect a join to be able to withstand forces beyond what the cable could bear to be conservative. They designed a join much more similar to what might be used in an industrial setting. And then we cut the join on a new harness and remade it to the new specifications. The overall design of this harness is still the best out there. But until they fix the join so I don’t have to have a professional engineer redesign it, this harness represents a flight risk, especially if you’re regularly outdoors with large birds. ... show more

  • Better than expected!
We own this leash and the Avian Fashions diaper leash for our cockatiel. We purchased the Aviator more than two years ago, and then never used it because we couldn't get it on our bird. Though friendly and sociable, he had developed the bad habit of attacking hands, and we simply couldn't handle him effectively to get the leash on. It got put in a drawer and forgotten. About a year ago, we bought the Avian Fashions diaper leash. It was a little easier to put on the bird, because it didn't have to go over his head. We could distract him with a zipper (his favorite toy) while we put it on. We had also made some progress with his hand aggression, and that helped too. However, although it fit fine and did the job (collecting poop and allowing for outings), the diaper left one major thing to be desired: Enjoyment. Our boy simply never got used to it. Every moment in the diaper is spent obsessively chewing on the back of the diaper. Taking him outside is great, theoretically, but since he spends the entire time chewing, it feels like a waste. Inside, he sits in one place and chews. No matter what we do, he spends every moment in the diaper chewing. We've tried bitter apple spray and distracting him with other toys, and nothing helps. Today, my son found the Aviator in a box (we've moved twice since purchasing it), and we decided to give it another go. We were pleasantly surprised at how quickly and easily it went on. With a cooperative bird, it's much faster than the Avian Fashions diaper leash. It's also lighter weight and easier to manage. And--ta-da!--he doesn't chew it!! At least, not obsessively. He's curious about it and, when bored, turns around to chew. But as long as we keep him occupied, he's able to really enjoy himself on the leash. We took him out in the yard, and he climbed trees, played in the grass, flew short distances, and generally had a ball. Long story short, this harness worked better than expected, and (for us), is an improvement over the Avian Fashions leash. Every bird is different, but for ours, this appears to be the leash we've been looking for. ... show more

  • Comparison to older similar parrot leash
I’m not including a photo since I’m sure there are many others (and also videos) plus it’s pretty self explanatory but this leash in the size recommended for a blue headed pionus, fits my blue headed pionus. I got the cobalt blue color which matches his head. I do think he’s more comfortable in this leash as opposed to his older similar same color and fabric leash he’s worn for many years (I forget the name brand of the old leash) but he’s 26 years old and is flighted so he must wear a leash outside and since he’s my beloved pet, it must be a secure leash. I think he doesn’t enjoy the process of putting this new leash on and taking it off because of how his wings have to be thread through it as opposed to the older leash which went under his wings and then clipped in the front but besides the process of putting it on and taking it off, I do think he feels more comfortable in it once it’s on due to having more room around his neck/crop area. I do worry a little bit about a larger parrot with a stronger beak possibly being able to chew through the black stretchy portion of this leash as well as the places where it’s clamped together with metal pieces (at least it’s not plastic that can break or be chewed through) which hold the thicker colored portion of the leash to the thinner black stretchy portion possibly coming apart. I also like that I can clip his old leash to a belt loop since it has a metal spring clip (if you know what I mean) whereas this one comes with a wrist loop - so just need to make sure the wrist loop is small enough for your wrist so it can’t come off easily! Or add a metal spring clip ... show more

  • Great for larger birds... good while it lasted for my goffins Great for larger birds... good while it lasted for my goffins
Update: Boo played with the clasp and somehow tightened this around his chest. When I loosened it and attempted to get it back over his head, he panicked. Now he's scared of this harness. It just takes once- so practice on a stuffed animal if you have to! I got an Aviator for Misha our Moluccan cockatoo, and it is MUCH easier to get on a larger bird, and 1-2 inches of looseness don't mean the difference between escaping or getting tangled like they do a smaller bird. When we were younger (10 years ago or so), my goffins cockatoo Boo, used to go out with me everywhere. I decided to purchase this harness after letting his wings grow for the first time and seeing how much fun he had flying around our bird-proof home. I can't bear to clip them so severely short again. I also read some horror stories on FaceBook and thru a local parrot rescue about clipped birds being stolen while out, flying off in gusts of wind, getting spooked and running into streets, etc. With the warm weather, I could tell that Boo was missing going out to eat and for walks like we used to. I purchased 2 grey Aviator harnesses for Boo and our adopted goffin, Arthur. The DVD didn't work with my Mac system - it appears to be formatted for TV sets without the option to play on a computer. Arthur is an exceptionally large goffins (around 400 grams, he is heavy boned and muscular), and it didn't seem to fit over his head very easily. I never did get it on him. He freaks out when his eyes are touched, and this couldn't fit over his big head with enough room to spare without touching his little bug eyes. I still have hopes that after he sees Boo getting so much attention with it on that he will tolerate it being slipped over his head. I might try the larger size. Boo, the goffins who I've had my whole adult life (13+ years) is smaller/more normal sized and the harness *did* go over his head. Once THAT was out of the way, this was easy to get on. He bit at me while I tightened it up, but it was quick to get on so serious damage to my fingers :-) Boo plucks, and he picks at this harness. I think he would pick at anything, though. At least he cannot get it off! Walking is awkward but not impossible with the way the leash hangs off the side/bottom. We're getting used to that. Getting it off his head is also a little awkward. As of this review, I've had it on Boo twice. Although he doesn't like it, he's accepts it, and I was pleasantly surprised that he let me put it on him again (and it was easier, the second time). He really had fun going for a walk and screaming at people in their yards, so hopefully that positively reinforced his experience. It was just like old times, except that he wasn't able to jump on strangers so easily! The second time he picked at it less than the first, so I hope that he'll start acting more normal with it on. Both times really tired him out like nothing else, and it's nice to have a quiet calm cockatoo! I really can't wait to start going out with him more regularly (Arthur will be jealous, and might learn thru observation). I would totally recommend this harness. It's quick and relatively easy to get on, and gives you amazing freedom to safely include your companion bird in more social activities. ... show more
