Description

A lavishly illustrated and definitive look at the design evolution of the racing motorcycle. The dynamic between competition and design has always fueled the evolution of racing motorcycles and inspired astonishing feats of design and engineering. This book traces the development of the sport bike, from the earliest French motorcycles to the dominance of British machinery in the 1930s, the exotic Italian motorcycles of the 1950s and 1960s, the influence of American racing in the 1970s and 1980s, and today’s Japanese superbikes. More than fifty classic motorcycles—from Harley-Davidsons to Peugeots, Velocettes, Moto Guzzis, BMWs, Kawasakis, and Ducatis—are presented chronologically illustrated with stunning studio photographs that present the machines as works of art and wonders of design in themselves, accompanied by rare and beautiful archival images that place the subjects in the contexts of classic races, rallies, and motorcycle shows, and accompanied by essays revealing the legends behind the machines. Some of the championship motorcycles featured include the 1902 Manon, the 1922 Harley Davidson 8-valve, the 1935 Terrot 500, the 1948 AJS Porcupine, the 1954 Moto Guzzi V8, the 1965 Honda GP 250, The 1976 Suzuki RK67, the 1986 Cagiva GP, and the 1990 Ducati Supermono. • Excellently executed reference
Very impressive book! Filled with large, clear, well composed photographs but the real value is the well researched text. In all, a beautifully composed reference for anyone from the pro racer to the casual motorcycle enthusiast. I bought this book during research for a project of my own and really didn't have high hopes of learning much. I discovered something I hadn't previously known within minutes of opening the book! Granted, it was a technical discovery, the principal I did already know, but it is such small overlooked details that set this work apart from typical coffee table picture books of this format. That IS NOT what this book is! A true "reference book" which just happens to be executed in an aesthetically beautiful way. The details of the written material and the details in making the photos compliment one another incredibly. Yeah, I'm impressed! ... show more

  • Excellent book showing designs that have both form and functionality
If you are an enthusiast of vintage motorcycles that were designed to go fast then this is the book for you. I thought hard before spending my money on buying this book and I am glad that my money did not go waste. Most people may regard this as a coffee table book. But this is a valuable asset for you if you are planning to design or build your own motorcycle or café racer. The photos in this book are of very high quality and shows the design details very nicely. This book is not about engineering design. This is all about how the designers back in the day have achieved a winning compromise between form and functionality that not only looks beautiful but also are race winning designs. As you go from the first photo (page) to the last one in the book, you can very clearly see how the design evolution has happened all with the increasing need for speed and handling. I have "The Art of The Motorcycle" from the Guggenhiem Museum and I feel the photos in this book are much better than the Guggenhiem book. ... show more

  • Chronological order of the one of the most outstanding racing motorcycles through the years,
Books on racing motorcycles are ten a penny. But most of the titles about the iconic models are glossy coffee table pieces with plenty of pretty pictures but little in the way of style or description of the models. So I was very happy to come across this very entartaining book of The art of the Racing Motorcycles in 100 years span. This book is an indispensable resource for anyone looking for information on racing motorcycles that raced last century all over the world ... show more

  • Nice book!
I purchased this book for my fiancé last year. He is an avid motorcyclist and also builds cycles. This book provides history, background and pictures. Not your average "coffee table" book. This past Christmas I purchased the book again to give as a gift for my brother. Overall, a good gift to give for someone who enjoys cycles. ... show more

  • Great Book!!
This book is not only beautifully illustrated I can't find anything that is not historically correct. Motorcycles and motorcycle racing has been a life long passion of mine (50+ years) so it refreshing to see one book have the subject covered so complete. Great job!!

Just gave this to my nephew who was hit by a truck while he was trying to wench someone out of a ditch during a snow storm. His leg was badly broken and after surgery he went to rehab. He loves motorcycles and was excited to get this book -- one he didn't have.
