  • Unique and VERY Beautiful!!!
Style: Vintage Educational Charts
A Beautiful presentation box containing a Fascinating and Colorful array of cards - and old-world designs - with helpful tabs. I just LOVE these!! And I plan to spend much time looking over these intricately beautiful designs. They are mostly in French, which is fine with me-- not only des it lend a unique aspect to these (almost like finding them in an old desk drawer belonging to your elderly aunt) but it gives me a chance to brush up on my French. Eminently giftable -- more than enough cards to pique my interest fr the rest of the year, and then...maybe to start perusing them all over again. HOWEVER, The beautiful box suffered an avoidable fate -- those little transparent adhesive discs holding the box closed -- no matter how delicately I peeled then off, they left a mark. Oh No......!!!! They blemished this otherwise beautiful object!!! A sturdy decorative paper "ribbon" (see my attempt) securely wrapped around the box would have easily held everything together and would have been SO EASY to remove, without damaging anything. AND.. WHY on earth would Amazon ship this beautiful but fragile item in a flimsy mailer when this was deserving of a Shipping Box? Two of the corners were smushed in -- I will try to bring them back to a presentable state with a cloth sprinkled with warm water . If I could rate the shipping it would get 2 stars because of this avoidable oversight. ... show more

  • No outer box or mailer

Large shipping label was adhered directly to product. I made a game of trying to remove the whole label in one piece, like we used to do with beer bottles, when it was still ok to drink beer with other people. I didn't succeed, but eventually I was able to remove most of the label and adhesive. Box was a teeny bit damaged, too. Fine for my purposes but I wouldn't recommend buying this as a gift. Each card is different and the botanicals are especially cool. Card stock is of adequate thickness for actual mailing. That's a thing we used to do involving stamps. If you're new to mailing things, these are a good size for sending a pleasant message without having to fill a whole piece of paper with words. I've found that people really like receiving cards, and it makes them feel special even if you don't think you have anything special to say. Recipients will probably enjoy hanging these cards on their bulletin boards or refrigerators because they're cool and interesting. ... show more

  • Unusual, but could be "just the right thing"
Style: Vintage Educational Charts
If you collect or trade picture postcards and are getting a little tired of collections of art, magazine covers, book covers or jokes, THE ART OF INSTRUCTION postcards may be just what you need. Here are 100 postcards, the majority based on French educational posters or wall charts of the 1950s and 1960s, pre-overhead projectors and Power Point. (The remainders are usually botanic drawings of similar vintage from a German source, but no knowledge of German is necessary.) The card box holding them is helpfully tabbed into sections "Anatomy," "Botany," "Zoology," and "Miscellany," the last one a real grab-bag of everything from the workings of a four-stroke engine to leather goods (*Le cuir est souple*). Now, it is undeniable that most of these cards are in French, so if the notion of a card entitled *Le Corps Humain* with body parts labeled in French rather than "The Human Body" is your particular *bete noire*, you'll want to avoid this purchase. For many of us, though, the use of French adds a kind of wry, impish aspect to the already retro quality of the drawings. Why was this set of cards labled "The Art of Instruction" and not "One Hundred Old-Time Illustrative Postcards Mostly in French"? Possibly because the woman who curated the book of the same name that this collection is based on is Belgian, and the polyglot quality would not be such a stumbling point. These cards seem to have a good reputation among Postcrossing members. Now that you know what this is, given the reasonable price, the good sturdy fabrication of the cards (very suitable for mailing) and the charming recipe-card type of box they come in, you'll understand my favorable review. ... show more

  • Nice Set Overall But The Miscellaneous Section Is Almost Useless
Style: Vintage Educational Charts
This is a very nice set of postcards overall, especially for the price. The cards are in French and are divided into four categories: anatomy, botany, zoology and miscellany. I have taken pictures of all the postcards and posted them to customer images so you can decide whether or not these would work for you. I think the anatomy and zoology postcards are pretty interesting but maybe not all of them are something you could send to someone. The botany cards are great and I could almost all of them. The miscellany cards are almost useless. There are some of tools and maps that could be good but then there are postcards of how to prepare chicken, a image of a curved road, or of women cleaning a house, just not anything I would be excited to send anyone. For the price I think there are plenty that could be sent and I would probably buy these again when they are gone. ... show more
