  • Good old fashioned adventure!
Good old fashioned adventure! This show is a fun watch that the kids love, after watching an episode or two my kids have adventure themed games for days afterwords. I think because the main character is a young boy, they connect with the story better and can envision themselves in his place having all the same danger and fun. Good clean show, I do not have to worry about censoring the show ahead of time. ... show more

  • 'Before the world discovered Indiana Jones, Indiana discovered the world'
Back in the early 1990's, ABC ran a program called The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. The idea was to follow Indy from a boy of about 8 up to the point we see him in the films. While the series was incredible in terms of production values, writing and acting, it ran into a few problems. While Indy does have adventures, they are typically not the search for lost treasure type. The series came under attack for violence, particularly in the WWI episodes, and bounced around in terms of time frame. Only 44 episodes were made before the series was canceled. These were later re-edited into 22 movie length features we have today. This first set in the collection follows the younger Indy as his father Henry Jones Sr. goes on a world speaking tour along with his mother Anna and governess Miss Seymour. Along the way, he meets various historical folk, T.E. Lawrence, Teddy Roosevelt, Picasso, and has a variety of adventures. Later, as a teen, Indy meets Edison and then heads into Mexico where he hooks up with Pancho Villa, and will later get swept up into WWI. Again, there is some great stories, acting and cinematography here, literally shot around the world with various directors and writers. I'd have to say my favorite two were Travels With Father, in which Indy and his dad go out on their own adventure and we get a crash course in philosophy, and Journey of Radiance in which Indy meets Jiddu Krishnamurti, and gets a bit of a lesson about religions. The DVD set has well done documentaries for the key people and events Indy encounters, so you are not only getting some great entertainment, but some education as well. Well worth a view for the price and recommended whether you are an Indiana Jones fan or just want a darn good series. ... show more

  • Young Indiana Jones, Volume One is my favorite
We purchased this set because it tells the story of how Indiana Jones got his spirit of adventure. It includes some interesting people and places which helps keep the interest of the story. We really like the Young Indiana Jones series. I actually prefer this Young Indiana Jones storyline over the older Indiana Jones stories. Thank you! ... show more

  • A great, if expensive, package
I can see that a lot of folks are upset over the pricing and spacing out of the young Indy saga and it is undeniable that obtaining the complete young Indy saga on DVD is going to be a not inexpensive proposition. That said, if you can afford it or are inclined to save your money to get it, I think this is an impressive endeavor. I do wish they had given us the introductions with old Indy and the great main title music on the movies, and the really young Indy episodes, which occupy a good portion of Volume 1, are, for me the weakest episodes (he's a little too precocious--one wonders how he keeps getting away with his escapades, his parents aren't paying much attention, but I guess if he didn't there wouldn't be any stories to tell) but it's a good start to the tale and the interaction with the various historical figures is a lot of fun (including seeing some character actors whose faces stir your memory from other things you've seen--Major League and I, Claudius to mention a couple). The movies are certainly worth the time spent. The really impressive parts for me are the extra features on the historical background. Entertaining and a painless way to flesh out the stories and learn a bit at the same time, sometimes about things that are fairly obscure, sometimes about things that you are superficially aware of but have never known much detail about. I think when you put it all together it is a pretty good package and well worth the price. I look forward to the next two volumes. ... show more

  • Unknown Indiana Jones as a boy.
If you like Indiana Jones movies these are excellent showing how he became thrust by circumstances as a child into finding answers to what were people like and how did they live long ago, leaving all these artifacts of their being there. Wonderful director being able to bring out that wonderment by a child actor. ... show more

  • Not True Indy, but still good fun
When The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles was first shown, I was sorely disappointed. Where was the searching for rare artefacts? Where was the whip? Where was the supernatural? Where was Harrison Ford? These elements, to my mind, so much part of Indiana Jones, where missing. What the series did have though, was a sense of fun and adventure, and this won me over as the first season progressed. Yes, it can be a bit earnest from time-to-time or annoyingly cute, but there were still the plenty of stunts and laughs to keep things going. This first volume though is not the first season of the Chronicles, rather is the rebranded "Adventures of Young Indiana Jones", where disparate episodes (made a couple of years apart), though chronologically adjacent, have been pieced together to make a series of TV movies. So, in the first story, we are greeted with the sight on 9 year-old Indy magically growing 12 inches, apparently within a week! That's a minor complaint though as it's all a blast. So, 3 stars for the movies. The documentaries on the disks are excellent and genuinely educational and not at all throwaway nonsense, they really bolster the quality of the boxset and earn it that extra star. ... show more
