  • Works Great and is a lot of fun
Style: Grill and Spit
I took this camping over a long weekend and was very glad to have it. It fit nicely inside the standard iron camping ring at our site. Hot Dogs and Burgers came out great as did the two beef roasts I made on the spit. The only thing that was a bit of a hassle was trying to cook chickens on the spit. The spit has only one stabilizing rod on it and that is fairly close to the center rod. The chickens would just flop around on the spit while I turned it to the next position. I tried filling up the cavities with onions but that didn't help. The chickens came out great and everyone was very surprised by how juicy the chicken was, it was just a hassle to get these chickens to turn just enough each time, especially while camping (raw chicken all over my hands). I had no problems with the beef though. The beef was easy to roast and turned out amazing. I just Speared the beef and then placed the whole thing on the cooking grate to sear the outside and then I put it all into the spit roast position and moved it to the next position every fifteen minuets. Everyone was very impressed by the beef. I would recommend getting some Heavy duty hearth gloves to use with this because everything is going to be very hot and rotating the spit between positions takes...some finesse. The Spit fits into the grill and there are four positions where you need to put the stabilization bar into. This means sliding the spit slightly horizontally and then rotating the spit then sliding it back. The grill could seem a little unstable to some but I didn't have any problems with it, It just wiggles a little when you manhandle it but it never made things difficult and I was never worried about it falling over. Other people reported that the paint flaked off and some welds came loose but I didn't have any of these things happen. And I put it into some really hot fires. I think the only thing that really could use improvement is the spit rod only having one stabilizing rod. Chickens being hollow need more stabilization. ... show more

  • ***LOVE IT***
Style: Grill and Spit
Unit was easy to purchase together...literally five minutes. I've read other reviews about it not being sturdy...I think it's super sturdy. There are metal "screws" (for lack of a better term) that come with it that are for making sure it's stable. You don't need them for any other reason. I can only suspect that others threw them out. Mine is sturdy. I haven't used it yet, but again - based on others' reviews - if I grill directly on it, I will put down some foil bc I don't think it's designed to cook food directly on it. I think it's to use the metal grate to put a cast iron pan on it. Anyways, super happy with my purchase - especially since I've been watching this product for a year. Prices keep fluctuating between $60 and $190?? Ridiculous. I waited til it got back down to the low again. It's worth $60. ... show more

  • Our group may glamp but we are pretty serious about cooking over the campfire
Style: Grill and Spit
Museum Portfolio 23-Inch by 31-Inch, BlackWe purchased this cooking grill along with our new travel trailer roughly a year ago. We have a large group of friends with whome we regularly camp. We've produced a lot of children along the way and they consume a lot of food while camping. Our group may be a bit lax in the roughing-it camping accommodations but we are pretty serious about camping over the campfire rather than ordering out. It's just something we like to do. I first tried this grill out in June of last year while camping along Lake Superior. It met *almost* every need required for our cooking style. We roasted a trio of chickens on the spit, it was sturdy enough to hold my large and heavy cast iron skillet with 3 pounds of bacon. Steaks, brauts, whatever *thumbs up*. There were only two shortfalls. 1. The surface area... we just needed more cook space because we are often grilling for two dozen. This problem was easily solved through a bit of engineering, however. One of the families we camp with loved the grill so much, they bought one too. We then were push re-bar rods through the two horizonal square channel feet and combine the two grills into a super-grill. We were further able to place a round grill grate fastened to another piece of iron rod and placed it on top using the vertical square channel as a holder for the rod. See included photo of Voltron Grill. 2. I wish the welds between the cooking grate and it's attachment bracket were a little stronger. One of the kids took a tumble onto our grill and it snapped at the weld :/ However, as a vote of confidence in the product I'm buying another. ... show more
