  • Replacing a 35 year old pack with this one.
Color: Mars Red
I own the Explorer 4000 backpack in Blue, which I LOVE. I bought it to have a new pack for when I go with my son on BSA campouts. We had given him my fathers old (35-year old) internal frame pack stored at our family cabin. When we got there, that pack had a huge rip near the top, rendering it useless. So, I gave him my Explorer 4000. I then bought this Fox 5200 to replace my pack. Yet again, Teton knocked this out of the park for me. There is plenty of room for what I carry to include a larger sleeping bag compartment than the 4000. Yes there are a ton of compression straps on this bag. I LOVE that! I immediately put the pack to use right after I received it in and all I can say is that it is adjustable enough for my 5'11" frame at 185 pounds. It is comfortable and fits all of my needs and wants. One more thing I enjoy with this pack over the Explorer 4000 is the location of the rain-fly. I like how it is up in the pack hood instead of below the waist straps/belt. This lets your buddy cover your pack without taking it off. Whereas, the Explorer 4000 does cover best if you take it off to get to the rain-fly. I think that was a good decision/move. Edit: adding pictures. All this with a LOT of room to spare for more equipment. ... show more

  • Awesome backpack for travel
Color: Mars Red
I originally bought this backpack to hike across Costa Rica in 2012. It's now 6 years later and the bag is holding up great. Maybe a few dirty marks and very small fraying on some of the threads but overall, it's almost like new. I use this backpack in any trip that lasts between 4-9 days. I doubt I could fit enough items in it for a longer trip at this size. I really comes down to what you bring with you. Me, I take 2 pairs of jeans and a pair of slacks to go out at night. 3-4 pairs of shorts or replace that with 2 more jeans if shorts aren't needed. 4 dress shirts, 4 t-shirts, and enough socks / underwear to last the entire trip without having to wash them. I'll also add in a pair of slippers, dress shoes and will wear sneakers/boots to the airport. Convenience factor 8. Plenty of pockets and straps. I couldn't use them all as I'm always noticing a new pocket placed somewhere. Nice back support system. I love using a backpack as it beats pushing/hauling a heavy suitcase around. Yes, you have wheels but it could be a pain trying to steer or get through crowds of people in a busy airport if you are rushing to your gate. When you get to stairs and there's no elevator, you have to haul your luggage up the stairs using that small silly handle. It's so easy to just strap this on and move around unless you're seriously out of shape and even then, maybe you should use the backpack to get in that much needed workout... Cons: Like people mentioned, the top opening is small. ~15 inches. Thus, it can be a pain if you constantly have to reach inside to retrieve an item. When I stay somewhere, I typically take everything out my suitcase anyway so I'm not constantly reaching inside for items. ... show more

  • Ample room, comfortable fit. Watch out for water!
Color: Aztec Blue
I recently used this backpack hiking in Shenandoah National Park. The back has ample space, and lots of straps for hooking your items to your bag's exterior. A word of caution: This bag comes with a rain cover, but it is attached to the inside of the uppermost pouch. You pull it down over your bag, and it covers it (for the most part) but if you are expecting any rain or wetness, make sure you have a couple of waterproof, sealable bags to keep your clothes and electronics in. This bag is water REPELLANT, but not water PROOF. The fabric can only resist water for so long before it becomes soaked, and so will your things. We found this out the hard way because every last bit of clothing we had on the inside of the bags were soaked. You don't want to be caught in cold weather with damp clothes, believe me. Lesson learned, but I still love the bag. Regardless, this bag has tons of features that I have fallen in love with. It has a separate compartment to fit your sleeping bag (which can be opened up to make more space), several straps on the outside to lash a bed roll, rope or any other number of things to it. Love this bag! ... show more

  • Inexpensive with a lot of good review, BUT
Color: Aztec Blue
We purchased this pack around January of this year for my son to use at Philmont this summer. When it arrived, it seemed to to be a decent, basic, large capacity pack. The suspension system was adequate. It seemed to be the correct size (5200 cc), with lots of attachment points, and straps galore. Not cutting edge, top of the line, but seemed to be good 2nd generation tech at a very good price. As we packed for the first pre-hike, we noticed that the top corner of one of the large side compantants had not been fasted, or "welded" down at the factory. Called customer service. They asked me to send a picture of the problem, which I did, and they fairly quickly informed me that they would be sending a new pack out. Son used the damaged pack without further problem. We got the new pack about a week later, was told to keep the old one, or donate it, and off we went. Next pre-hike, we load up the new pack, and off he goes. He returned a few days days later, and the top compartment zipper had failed. I simply unhooked it, and swapped it out with the top compartment/Fannie pack of our "old" bag. I was eventually able to fix the zipper, and now it works fine. My son returned from Philmont earlier this month. The left side of the sleeping bag compartment was ripped from top seam to bottom seam. The blue material simply split. The pack is still functional, the rip is certainly not large enough for a sleeping bag to fit through, but it was a failure none the less. I was looking for some basic inexpensive gear for a couple Scouts to use. I thought I had found the company that could do that--now I am not so sure. ... show more
