  • Great Info
Back in 1967 I taught myself to play guitar with a similar book from Hal Leonard. I have a friend who wants to learn to play so I’m hoping this book does the same for her as it did for me. I purchased the wire-bound because it opens and stays flat. Definitely worth the extra money. Here's hopin'!

  • Easy to understand and learn guitar
This is a nice beginning guitar book. I purchased it for my fiance as he bought a guitar and is trying to learn how to play it. The book is laid out in easy to read detail with a nice graph on the back of the book. Since my fiance is unfamiliar with reading music, or has never had music lessons this book teaches you to play by tab format and is simple for him to understand. Tab (or tablature) is a way of writing down music that can be played on guitar, or drums. Instead of using symbols like standard music notes, it uses ordinary characters and numbers. Tab is one of the best ways to learn music for those who don't know music notes or have never had music classes. Reading tabs is a lot easier and quicker than learning in the traditional way, so it's great for beginners. Because of this he is learning his chords so much quicker. I love that the book covers chords and position chords and is allowing him to learn chord patterns, and correct hand positions for the guitar. The book covers a lot of different styles of music and includes good pictures and descriptions that are simple enough to give him a good start to learning guitar. I consider this book and excellent value, worth every penny of the asking price here and we are definitely enjoying my fiance's newfound guitar skills. He's only had the books a few weeks and is already playing several songs. ... show more

  • Fast intro to self-taught guitar, but not enough to *learn* guitar - UPDATED
If you want to start playing guitar rather than reading about how to play guitar, this is a decent book. While lacking in detail, it is probably the fastest way to learn the basics of playing guitar. It lacks the depth of some other great books (Guitar for Dummies being a good one, albeit verbose), but if your objective is to start playing as quickly as possible without reading too much, this book is a great option. I think it also helps novices progress through the simple chords early before moving to trickier chords. For the price, you can't go wrong trying it out. I think it could benefit from a few more song tabs in the early stages, however, be aware that there are so many beginner tabs available freely on the internet these days. The book doesn't explain some of the notation used in the tabs (circled numbers vs uncircled, partial chords, tick marks, finger positioning), which would have been very helpful. Overall, I'd recommend this book to a beginner who wants to play guitar quickly, but I do *not* advise this book for those who want to *learn* how to play guitar I would advise another more in-depth book to supplement (the Dummies book is great). This book will likely get you through the first month or two of learning guitar. -------- Update 1.5 years later: For those stumbling across this review and wondering what I found to be the best teach-yourself guitar book: I highly recommend Justin Guitar's introductory course. ... show more
