  • Requires extensive musical knowledge and a paid license
This wasn’t a favorite. While it will help if you use FL Studio, this is a paid software product. If you are using the free or trial version, you are not allowed to save your project until you pay for a license. I understand some tech manuals are for paid projects but it always seems to me like that guidance should be included in the official documentation for the product. If I have paid, I expect a higher level of service. My other complaint is that half of the chapters deal with using additional software, whether paid or free. With all that, this text still provides coverage of the basic program. The introduction states that this is for musicians, composers, and producers with no pre-existing technical skills. While that is accurate, it overlooks the level of technical music knowledge required to use this software. This is not a mix of pre-existing music, but the ability to compose music online, with multiple instruments, through selecting which notes need to be played. This level of musical knowledge requires you to know at least one instrument, and understand the basics for composing. The best part of the book is the working details, how to find a job, how to prepare for that job, and how to structure your work to accomplish these goals. The checklists in Chapter 8 are excellent to guide how one can build and implement a soundtrack. The earlier guidance at composing towards certain musical effects like generating fear, showing elation, or linking to sound-effects are extremely useful. Overall, the product is not expensive with a one-time price running between $100-500 with no subscription fees. If you are already in the musical realm, this could be helpful. If you have no musical training, and are looking to jump into the digital field, the business tips are great, but this is not the book for you. ... show more
