My use for the 50 inch display is to replace an old 42 inch flat panel in the bedroom. The colors are great, the backlight works well for dark scenes, the sound is loud and clear for my bedroom but sound processing does require me to adjust volume from time to time. Dialog is clear, and I highly recommend using theater setting with surround on. My cons: Aside from the volume processing I already mentioned, the CEC switching is slow at the start when using my Apple TV. Also, one thing that is not spec related, the smell of my panel reeks of Made in China. Now I’ve owned plenty of devices from China, but this unit reeks of some kind of chemical. I notice the smell every time I walk into my bedroom. I aired out my bedroom and wiped down my unit with a microfiber towel plus a small amounts of vinegar, the smell returned. If the smell continues I may exchange the unit. I have an air purifier and that still didn’t help. Aside from the smell the unit works extremely well. I can’t recommend it because of the smell, maybe if you get a larger display in an open room. ... show more

The box arrived damaged but the tv was not. I found it easy to install. The ROKU part was easy enough. We are very satisfied compared to our older tv. We are now streaming several channels including free ones. The colors are vibrant. Would recommend.

Background: We purchased the 65-inch S535 model about a month ago but weren't very satisfied with it. We saw the new S555 model released recently and the price is the same, so we decided to give the new model a try. Here're the pros and cons of the S555 model compared to the S535 model: + (2~3 seconds) faster response time in terms of opening apps and loading movies. + The brightness of the S555 model is better than the S535 model (prbably the same as the S546 model. The power rating tag of S555 is 275W compared to S535's 190W). + The S555 model has much better picture quality as you can see in the attached photos (S555 on the shelf, S535 on the floor. In case someone is curious about it, the shelf is IKEA's KALLAX which fits the 65 inch TV perfectly). We set the picture settings of both TVs to the same, and the S535 TV's color is obviously uneven and yellowish. - The S555 model's number of contrast zones for local dimming is half that of the S535 model. - The frame and stand of the S555 model is worse than the S535 model (painted iron-like frame vs. textured steel frame; plastic stand vs. metal stand). Additional comments: I have a feeling that TCL North America is trying to hide the tech specifications in the NA market, which makes it hard to compare different models before you purchase. However, TCL does provide detailed tech specifications in the Chinese market. Also, here's a fun quote from TCL China: "To put it simply, with dozens of contrast zones, the overall picture quality can barely improved. For 100+ contrast zones, the overall picture can be significantly improved. For 300+ contrast zones, the overall picture quality is comparable to the OLED". It's a shame to see that TCL North America is gradually reducing the number of contrast zones for the 5-series. ... show more

Good picture once you turn off motion smoothing. Audio is pretty bad, but I was planning to hook it up to a soundbar anyway. I did have some trouble setting up the soundbar because I originally used optical and then switched to HDMI, but when I did that, the audio kept playing from the TV speakers, even when muted, until I noticed that the optical cable was still plugged in. Remote is a bit finicky since it has to be pointed directly at the TV. Every remote I've had for the last decade has been Bluetooth or something, so that's a bit of a disappointment. It's also very smooth and hard to hold, especially to press the volume buttons, and doesn't have lost remote finder. ... show more
